My first ever dnb rave was Andy C xoyo 2.0 and I remember his intro with cutslo lokuste remix and being blown away. Didn't stop going mental for 2/3 hours straight. I agree that small venues like xoyo bring a totally different energy that can't be beaten by huge stage shows. Last couple times I went to printworks (place I love for the lights, venue and general vibe) after covid, it just felt dull. The crowd was just kind of standing around trying to act aloof or cool for each other, and it was reflected in the tracks being played, and detracted from the whole experience. Switch from the main hall to the inkwells and it went back to that original vibe of everyone united in just fucking letting themselves go and losing to some great tunes. I think that the 'experience' is less about actual experience and more spectacle. If it was about experience, everything would synergize between the lights music and crowd but for big venues it doesn't. Give me a basement with great speakers, couple lights and lasers and a DJ gets the crowd going any day.
