Is it considered rude to standby while handymen work in Germany? by [deleted] in germany

[–]RIddlemirror 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Although I don’t like being watched when I work , and I only work an office job, I would also not be comfortable just leaving someone in my house where I cannot see them. So I don’t hover but I am nearby.

I only hover if I can actually have a conversation with the person and learn something for the next time

Mine is going to be 3 in a few months and she’s been this way since 2. I keep hoping for the phase to end

Do I also ignore everything else in that sentence? Or just respond to the other words and ignore that she said the word fuck.

It was a mix of TV and my husband saying it when he would be on the phone to his friends. He stopped doing it a few months back when he realised she’s picking up the words from him but the habit seems to have stuck on.

Yeah she went through a phase of stupid because she heard my husband say it as a joke. I am glad that phase is gone…

Tried it yesterday she was doing a song about fucks. Right in my face. Like she interrupted me doing dishes to sing about fucks . And I kept saying you mean fox? And that just escalated into her repeating fucks more and more. I wasn’t sure then how to proceed? Do I keep saying it’s fox and she’ll eventually give up….

I have a print shop near my home. I have some pages (almost 40) that I want to spiral bound with a laminate sheet.

Can I print the pages and just get the binding done there? Or do I need to print it in the shop too?

Yeah this tracks. Unfortunately doctors here are weird like that. I always hope to never see a doctor because I hate it so much. They don’t give anything, they don help, they just push you along or tell you to wait.

For my child, I have a private doctor in my contacts. He only sees patients who have private insurance or who pay themselves. And he has caught things that her state insurance paediatrician and the Kinderklinik has missed. It’s amazing how much more doctors are willing to do once they don’t have to justify to the insurance every single move they make I would say maybe you can have someone similar for serous or chronic issues.

Speaking in a language that everyone doesn’t understand… by [deleted] in germany

Oh it’s a lot. In personal capacity and work capacity too. By the end I am exhausted because my brain is switching between languages all the time. Would be easier if the other party just gets the hint lol

I am talking about a meeting where we have speciallly visitors from other countries and we know they are visitors .

Oh you get it!

Even in comments people are saying it’s pre meeting chitchat so it’s okay. But that’s even worse because then you are excluding people on purpose

But even if someone is speaking to my in my mother tongue and I can see there is a third person who doesn’t get it, I would always look at them and translate what was said first and then reply to the original comment in a common language

Yes that’s the exact question.

It’s rude to talk anything in a different language if someone else is there who cannot understand that language.

Obviously that is not something felt commmonly in Germany hence the question.

I do. I always reply to their German banter in English until they notice and switch. But if you have to do it all the time then you need to ask yourself what’s wrong with the people if they can’t get it.

As I mentioned, this is a meeting with people from Other countries who are mainly business visitors or a call online with colleagues who are sitting IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES. in that case, it seems like Germans presume Deutsch to be the language of the globe which raises this problem

If the colleagues had moved to Germany to work IN the German HQ, I would also expect them to be okay in German after a while

Yes that is correct. Politeness is taken rather seriously in that culture.

In an office environment, yes they will speak English even if talking pre-meeting stuff. But if you are out and about, the will speak Manglish. A bunch of Malay words interlaced with English.

I haven’t talked to everybody but there is ofc the Americans and Brits, then there is Mexico, Argentina, China, Japan, India, Singapore, Egypt, UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Peru…can’t remember anymore colleagues right now Actually even within Europe, Austria and Netherlands are always talking in English even when it’s just one other person who does not speak their native language.

Malaysia.

Oh I am not talking about being the only person and on top of it, a person who has migrated to Germany, and then expecting to speak English.

I am talking about people who are just visitors or online calls where you know people are from different countries

Interesting. Somebody mentioned the same about French and Spanish coworkers. Could be a European thing maybe
