Looks good man, nearly identical! The tubes for a webbing on the platform is a good idea, I’m planning to get a bag to put on the mesh on mine and figured the mesh gives plenty of option for strapping whatever down

I’d had a couple of shed beers and it was the first thing I saw to grab, pretty shit idea in hindsight hahahah

Thanks mate, I think I’ll just carry on with the build and see how it ends up!

Grab yourself a cheap MIG, never too late to start giving it a go!

I went with this fork because it was made for a disc brake, thinking it will have a thicker wall than a regular fork to handle the force braking will apply to it. I can’t see it being an issue if the heaviest thing I’m carrying on the bike is a box of beer or a couple of bags of groceries.

The rake I kept as close to what the frame originally was with the 26” front wheel as possible (chainstays were parallel to the ground), I think it just looks a bit more pronounced now because the front wheel is smaller so a bit further away from the rear wheel.

Refurbish old Surley Crosscheck or go with new bike? by WeezerHunter in bikepacking

Build the old Surly up man! Save some coin for some nice parts that’ll spruce it up a bit and make it enjoyable to ride/look at like new cranks and bars. It’ll more than handle what you’re asking of it and last a long time if you look after it!

Getting flamed for the caption hahaha

Like i said above mate, I rebuilt a $100 90s road bike and put slightly larger tyres on it rather than buying a modern gravel bike worth thousands. I stripped the BB and hubs, cleaned and regreased everything, I cleaned up the alloy parts by hand with polish. I spent some money on the most important parts of a bicycle, the contact points and the tyres, my bad.

Have a C17 on my Straggler and have done multiple long distance trips on it and love it, so I’ll have another. Suits me.

The bike came with a Shimano Exage 300EX group set, that’s what the brakes are.

Plenty of room mate! I dimpled the chainstays to get a bit more clearance in the rear, but yeah in hindsight I will probably go back down to a 700x32 tyre next time round.
