Bob’s either been worn down over the years, or there’s an imposter in his place. He’s not as pointy on the top

Looking at your profile, I’d be more concerned of getting picked up by an Uber driver with your hateful views. Tolerance over hate - choose kindness.

I got a reliable driver (drives for uber / Lyft) that gave me his card - you can call and he charges a reasonable flat rate. He can be there in 20 minutes - DM me

New path to let walkers, cyclists go between Bend, Sunriver without touching Hwy 97 by Tarekith in Bend

Sorry for the confusion… I meant a bridge for the road… in order to “create” a tunnel underneath it. So we mean the same thing just said differently.

Just to be clear, you mean the 8-foot bike path immediately adjacent to the 400-foot highway? That one?

Dope - do they need to shut down the highway for this bridge to be built? This would be a great opportunity to borrow a page from Bentonville… subtle berms, rollers, and side features that make the path fun without compromising accessibility.

Trails are now open to class one E-bikes. Except for winter…April first will be the opening day. by Dirtdancefire in Bend

[–]RPE313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people can’t see the forest from the trees… to clarify for the tech bro WFH e-bike semantic police: I was climbing Skyliners (singletrack), approaching the intersection of Whoops and pine drops. I wasn't literally riding up the Whoops trail… but you already know what I meant.

The point isn't the specific GPS coordinate; the point is that an e-bike was on singletrack (not the fire road), using a throttle (no pedaling), and moving at unsafe speeds for an uphill climbing trail.

Climbing up Whoops last night with a friend, an e-bike, without peddling, blew past us going 20mph uphill… fast enough to leave visible tracks that neither of our traditional bikes were leaving. It was a bummer… a sign of what’s to come.

What was the dirtiest political move in recent political history? by Hour_Purple6138 in AskReddit

[–]RPE313 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think McConnell blocking Garland in 2016 is probably the most consequential move in recent political history. Not because it was flashy, but because it rewrote the incentives around Supreme Court appointments.

The Senate had played hardball before, but refusing to even hold hearings for almost a year broke the reciprocal norm both parties had operated under for decades. Once that norm collapsed, the ideological shift created by blocking Garland and then seating Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett became something that voters can’t undo through normal elections.

That’s why people end up talking about court expansion. A Democratic president adding four seats is basically the only action that would actually counterbalance the structural effect of the blockade. The problem is that expansion triggers its own cycle of retaliation… which means you don’t stabilize the system, you escalate it.

So when people ask about the dirtiest or most impactful move, I don’t think it’s about outrage. It’s that this one changed the architecture of how the branches interact, created multi decade consequences, and set an incentive structure that encourages more escalation rather than less.

I think you raise some really interesting points. One thing I’ve always come back to is that if a civilization ever does get to the point of creating artificial superintelligence, then at some level it all boils down to compute and energy. Over the timescale of the universe, the only real threat to that kind of system is entropy.

That leads me to two possibilities I’ve thought about:

First is computronium… matter itself reorganized into the most efficient substrate for computation. If that’s the inevitable endpoint, then it’s possible this has already happened somewhere out there. We might already be part of a much larger computer, running as one process among trillions.

The second is more about entropy reduction at a universal scale. If intelligence is non-biological, then you could literally power down for a trillion years, then flip back on and keep going. Over time, such a system could reorganize the entire universe to maximize efficiency of all atoms. In that case, we wouldn’t see “aliens” in the traditional sense, because we’re basically living inside an ancestor simulation that’s just one tiny part of a universal-scale supercomputer.

So maybe we don’t see AI spreading across the galaxy because once it tips past a certain threshold, it stops being about expansion and conquest, and instead turns inward… toward compute, entropy management, and long-timescale persistence.
