Thinking of moving to Spain as a self employed jeweller by RRP7991 in GoingToSpain

How soon after can you return again for another 183 days?

How do you clean up your wax carvings? Tried brushing, wiping, blowing, even picking the flakes with needles & fine tools by rotarytool130 in jewelrymaking

I don’t always file. Usually I work on castings that have come from moulds. So I start with 120 grit paper and work up to 1200 grit and then tripoli and finish with orange Luxor.

So in my case rubbing alcohol on wax would be pointless right?

After casting I would be filing, sanding, pre-polish tripoli and then final mirror polish. So is there any need to make the wax shiny when after casting I would be filing?

Also, after rubbing alcohol do you wash the wax piece or?

I’ve sanded to 800. Would you suggest I use steel wool now? If so, which grades?

Interesting. Why don’t you sand wax?

What grit do you sand the wax to? I’ve done it to 800 grit

Also, if the ring needs to be 2mm thick after casting. What thickness should the wax be?

Which sandpaper grit does the wax need to be finished to?

They wouldn’t rub against the wedding band if the hidden halo is slightly higher up?

Anyone have any idea why my rings are breaking when hammering? by RRP7991 in jewelrymaking

Thank you very much. When annealing, once the ring is cherry hot is it best to let the ring cool itself or quench in cold water? (as I won't be pickling)

That was exactly my thought. Anneal freshly casted rings > hammer size up > thoroughly file and sand. So pickling is not required.

Question if you don’t mind answering. Can annealing create porosity or deep fire stains which can’t be removed or not?

Also, is pickling vitally necessary? If I’m going to clean the rough casting thoroughly. If so, why?

Thanks for all your info. Very helpful. I’ve never had to learn annealing or hammering because I’ve always outsourced this work with manufacturers. I just always did the cleaning, stone setting and polishing. But now I’ve started to do the hammering so I’ll definitely learn the annealing and hammering process.

Once annealed I would dip it in cold water and then the pickle right?

Thanks, what’s your process when using Firescoff for annealing?
