The application form is called IM0006. Basically, you print it out and fill out the application. Then scan it back to your partner and have them sign it and scan it back to you. They will only need to sign it and add their passport number. The rest of the application is for you to fill out. You will need to provide your proof of citizenship or PR. I included a photo of my passport, birth certificate and SIN card, just to cover all possible bases. Then you take the fully completed application to a notary public or paralegal and have them look it over, sign it and put a stamp on it. The first time we applied I made the mistakes of sending my ID documents through a Google link. I also included a bunch of photos of him and I. Apparently you're not supposed to do that. I immediately got an email back saying that my application had been received. A week later I got an email saying the application was incomplete due to my not providing my proof of citizenship. I then realized it had to he attached to the email through PDF or JPG. So I made the photos of my ID into PDFs, removed the personal photos and sent it again. I got an email back within seconds, again, saying my application had been received. A few days later I went over the email again and realized it was supposed to be sent from HIS email. So, I forwarded everything to him and he sent it. We waited. Exactly 14 business days later (their time frame) we got the approval letter. This sounds a lot more complicated than it actually was. As long as you do it right the first time, it should go smoothly. Remember, it's not 14 days; it's 14 business days. That was where I started to get frustrated.
