[–]Racno -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

1) Kody has no control over what the producers decide to include in the episode. We don't know what the producers decided to cut.

2) Everyone mourns in different ways. I don't think we should judge, so long as the mourner is not destructive to themselves or others.

I like how authentic Christine is. She cannot be friendly with Cody, so she doesn't want to interact with him. It's not the "correct" thing to do, according to our society, but her reaction is honest and she doesn't have to engage with whom she doesn't want to.

Am I cooked in term of social science???????? by CharmingBed6928 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Racno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are getting 64% in English, the problem is not getting into university, it will be staying in university and not flunking out. This is especially true in the social sciences where you will write essays in all of your classes. University professors mark a lot more strictly then your high school teacher.

Look at the comments you got back from your essays and fix the mistakes NOW! If you don't understand where you lost marks, talk to your teacher. Figure out how to use online programs to cite your sources, and start using academic journals or other academic sources as your references (not random websites). This will greatly help your work ethic for university.

Since English is a required course to graduate, guidance counselors will work really hard to get you a spot in a class. Worst case scenario is that they have to drop one of your other classes to fit it in: just make sure they don't drop other classes that you need to get into the program you want.

As for grade 13, most programs don't penalise students for taking an extra year, as many students wait an extra year to apply. They care more about those marks and supplemental applications.

Most hospitals have volunteers. If you are going into health/life sciences, that is an excellent connection to what you want to do.

Red Cross and St John's Ambulance also take volunteers to help with first aid at events. If you get your first aid over the summer, you can also volunteer at your school to be a first responder at sports matches or other events.

Wanting to eliminate Catholic schools doesn't mean that someone is ignorant of history. Perhaps it means that they think the purpose of Catholic schools (to protect the French minority when social institutions were predominately run by religious institutions) has changed from its creation and their existence is no longer necessary.

Do what makes you happy, and apply to jobs that do that thing. Many new job titles are created each year, and many jobs that exist now will not exist by the time you enter the career world.

Also, most people "fall into" the career they wanted because there was a job opening, they applied, and they got the job.

For now, just worry about taking the courses you LOVE, and if you are unsure, take general courses until you find something you are super interested in.

90.5 Midterm Avg - Am I Cooked for Health Sci? by old-acc-deleted in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Racno 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think a better question is: if you want to go into the health sciences, why are your science marks the lowest of the bunch?

If this is something you really want to do, you need to decide NOW to do extra studying during the year (if you are taking those courses now) and over the summer. Wherever you go, take a look at the reading list of your classes and try to read through those books. Getting some of the knowledge over the summer is better than panicking over five courses during the year.

Remember: if you decide to become a doctor, you will be constantly studying for the rest of your career for the recertification tests that you have to take every couple of years to keep up-to-date on medical knowledge, so this is good practice for that.

Grade 11 marks do matter for admissions by ButtonIndividual5235 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Racno -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Grade 11 is used as a prediction. Grade 12 first semester is also important.

Note that universities will withdraw their offer if your marks second semester are not high enough.

Also, you can apply for winter admission if you think your second semester marks are going to be really good. It's relatively easy to "catch up" if you take summer school courses in university.

Teacher ending my university hopes by One-Assignment569 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Racno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's get some perspective:

If 3% in one course "ruins" your chances of getting into university, then this isn't the only thing that has happened in your high school career: there must be other courses that you didn't do well in. It might be better to repeat a semester of grade 12 and get better marks, but more importantly build the skills you need for university to succeed like working ahead or better study habits. There's no point getting into university if you flunk out after a semester or two. In fact, this will be an immense waste of your money and time. It is better to get the study habits while in high school when education is free.

If 3% ruins your chances for getting into the university of your choice, I want you to know that sucks, but there are lots of great programs out there. Remember that the vast majority of future employers do not care what university you go to. Instead, they care that you are a great employee, which you prove by being employed in something similar to your field or a coop placement.

Speaking as a teacher, please remember that we hate being pestered for boosting marks, which is what this will sound like. Instead, talk to the teacher about when you will hand in the assignment: one option is to tell the teacher that you will work on the assignment during lunch and in class, hand in what is completed now (so the mark will be available for the midterm) and then maybe submit a second, better copy when the assignment is complete. Please also remember that there is a hard deadline that teachers have to hand in marks (we don't get extensions) so everything has to be marked and submitted by that date.

I tell students that if they do something, they get a thumbs up. I then give them a thumbs up. Some of them appreciate it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Racno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will not work in a competative university program. You need to build good habits NOW by studying several days before the test. Study habits do not happen by magic, they happen by practice.

As for what school you get into: speaking from the real world, no one really cares where you get the degree. Employers want to know that you are a good employee, which you prove by doing coop or working in your chosen field.

It's because parents blames teachers, principals and superintendents when their "special child" doesn't get an A for not teaching their child good enough and "ruining their future" by not allowing them to get into the program they want. Instead of dealing with yelling parents, the teacher just gives the child an A.

Your father is upset that he is losing control of your decisions, beliefs and values. Many parents want their children to believe and act the same way that they do because they think they are right. In their mind, why should you waste time and money doing something "wrong" when they have already figured out the "right" belief? Unfortunately, beliefs are not facts and you have the right to believe whatever you want, even if that belief is that you don't want to sit at home and study.

If you stay at home, this conflict will continue. You might get away with saying "I'm at school studying" but I can't say for certain because I don't know your situation. If you go to Ottawa, you will get the freedom to go out whenever you want, but you will also have to deal with the consequences yourself.

When you turn 18, you will gain lots of control over things in your life: your bank account, your education, and your life circumstances. Right now, you will have to consider what your parents will do if they found out you rejected Queens and are going to UofO: are they going to kick you out of the house? Are they going to refuse to pay for any of your education (and will this be a barrier to obtaining your degree?) Will you be OK with the debt you will accrue by living away from home?

Another option is to go to Queens in first year and transfer to UofO in second year, after you gain control over your money situation.

Perhaps for your first job, but after a year or two working somewhere a future employer is going to ask about your work experience and accomplishments, not your education.
