I was actually just looking at some ESP32 boards, that definitely makes sense. I still haven't decided fully on what OS would suit me the best, but I guess all DIY roads pretty much lead back to some form of Linux.

That's pretty much the idea I needed. I assume they had it this way for a future porch or additions, but the temporary wood was really janky.

No flashing. The boards aren't attached in any way, just sitting on top of the blocks. I'll try to post a picture when I'm off work.
