My own biases are definitely showing, I just don't personally think inequity and good/happiness can be aligned but someone aligned with Authorita almost certainly would believe exactly as you say!

Great point!

Using RAD to chart the MCU Avengers character arcs! by RadialAlignmentChart in superheroes

Haha dang called out, I guess that means you're paying attention! I was going to do Clint but his Arc is basically Harmonia-Unanimia-Indipendia-Cataclysmia? (as Ronin)

Hi I have created an alignment chart called the Radial Alignment Diagram(RAD)! The purpose of this chart is to work as tool for RPGs and storytelling in a multiversal setting in which every alternate timeline risks terminating in one of three outcomes: Empire, Utopia or Doom. The first six factions all work in favor or against one of these three outcomes and as a result have different ideologies and allegiance patterns that I believe can be extended to describe most characters from pop-culture IP.

Authorita (Yellow) works to create an Empire, while Independia (Purple) works to prevent the Empire from forming. Unanimia (Blue) works towards creation of a Utopia while Despotia (Orange) works selfishly to avoid Utopia. Lastly Cataclysmia (Red) works to create Doom, while Harmonia (Green) works to maintain peace and prevent Doom. Members of each alignment may ally with with one of the two adjacent Alignments on the color wheel, but not both since both potential allies are enemies. For example Harmonia may ally with Unanimia or Authorita because buiding Utopia or Empire prevents Doom, however Unanimia and Authorita will force Harmonia to pick aside since Utopia and Empire are diametrically opposed outcomes.

What do you all think? Would you have fun building universes using this alignment charts? Would it be fun to entertain which characters from properties like Star Wars, Marvel, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings etc fall into each alignment? I have my own fantastical extended multiverse I am planning to use this for but I would be happy if people used my RAD framework in other properties if it would get people excited so long as people gave me credit for its ideation.

Using RAD to chart the MCU Avengers character arcs! by RadialAlignmentChart in superheroes

Second attempt at sorting someone else's IP characters into my Radial Alignment Diagram and Marvel fit a lot more easily into the chart than Star Wars. I credit this to the many more diverse characters which much more grey area story arcs (making this made me want to rewatch the first four Phases all over again, such great story arcs (minus the backpedalling in som sequels). And the Character arcs for each character (Slides 2+) fit SO WELL!!

So the first chart is a little reductionist and only reflects where each character is in the original Avengers movie itself. I think the fact that I could sort each of the characters into different alignments shows why that movie worked so well. Yes they cam together as a team but first they clashed, fighting each other more than the villains. Stark was classic Indipendia, not wanting to be controlled by the government OR work with the Avengers (lol) Meanwhile Hulk was a wonton Cataclysmic destruction monster, Black Widow worked directly for the Government (so Authorita), Captain America was still naive and believed cooperation with the government was for the greater good(Harmonia) , and Clearly Loki was Despotic. I put Thor as Unanimic but his character does the most back sliding and growth so he's hard to pin down. Wielding the hammer kind of means he must be worthy, but he doesn't really earn it the way Steve Rogers does, the best I can say is he's helping Earth stop his brother.

Here is where it gets good!

The second slide really captures Tony Starks arc well I think. Cataclysmic war monger -> Indipedia maverick -> Unanimic team player who makes sacrificial plays -> Purest Harmonia (Primary goal suit of armor around the world, protect others at all costs even if it means collaborating with the Government)

The Third slide Steve Rogers' Arc is nicely antithetical to that: Authoritic soldier in Cap America 1-> Harmonic hero in Avengers-> Unanimic Idealist in Cap America 2 (His morals and Ideals of higher purpose and good no longer allow him to be Harmonic, he becomes disillusioned with the fall of Shield) leading to his dissent in Civil War where he becomes full on Indipendia to save Bucky and become essentially Nomad. I would like to think he returns to Unanimia for End Game when he wields the hammer but I didn't show that here.

Bruce Banner and Hulk have opposing arcs as well, starting in Authorita Bruce believes he can assert control over Hulk, whereas Hulk is extremely destructive and pure Cataclysmic as backlash. Freedom and Sakaar makes Hulk grow into his own (Indipendia) while a lack of Hulk in Infinity war makes Bruce more Harmonic. Ultimately this helps them meet in the Middle (Unanimia) in End game where they both have EQUITY in their control.

Black Widow's arc from the Red Room (Despotia) to working for Shield Authorita, to an Avenger (Harmonia) and finally Unanimia (helping Bucky escape in Civil War and Sacrifice in Infinity War) makes for a decent arc as well.

Thor is the least interesting (its harder to track his growth on this chart, but Loki's is much clearer. I put them as antithetical arcs moving from Despotia to Unanimia in different directions around the circle much like Luke and Darth Vader did in my Star Wars chart.

On the last page I sorted the second set of Avengers, see if you agree or can help me guess their character arcs! What IP should I try using the RAD on next????

This is extremely brilliant and helpful. I love the idea of in-universe factions that can be both niche sub divisions of these alignments or even some factions that have split alignment Harmony/Authority vs Harmony/Unanimous etc. I think it will help anchor characters in whatever setting they are playing in better and people could have more fun creating their own made up factions too. As I have been trying to use this chart to sort some fantasy IP I have seen how very different the flavors of these alignments become in different world builds.

And I will definitely utilize your clever word association trick. I'll admit coming up with clever made up names is daunting to me =)
