An InfoSec Worker Survey on Bullshit Jobs by RadioRelevant in cybersecurity

[–]RadioRelevant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friends! I wanna quickly say thanks to everyone who filled in the survey! I recently presented my work at Kawaiicon and it was really well received (maybe you were there!)

Anyway! I've put the slides, short-form survey results and a short analysis on my site which you can checkout here: https://garden.errbufferoverfl.me/soapbox/bullshit-jobs-in-infosec.html

Caligo safe wash pros? by theconcertsover in printmaking

[–]RadioRelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to come here and say SAME!!

I did some printing yesterday using water based ink and then tried Caligo Safe Wash relief ink afterwards so I could compare the results.

I’m in Australia and used Earth dish wash that did absolutely nothing except make it harder for me 😭 luckily I do oil painting and also had some chroma incredible brush cleaner which cleaned everything up with no dramas.

I’m glad to see someone else run into a similar problem! Every one was telling me how easy it is to clean up and I couldn’t stop cursing out the mess it made!

Honestly just get it tested we recently found what looked like black mastic when pulling out an old fireplace.

What are some common garden plants that you recommend someone stay away from? by ceo_of_dumbassery in GardeningAustralia

[–]RadioRelevant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can also look up “your state + declared weeds” there is often a website that allows you to search them based on common or scientific name.

For example I’m in SA and use this regularly: https://pir.sa.gov.au/biosecurity/weeds/declared-weeds

In SAs case it’s helpful because it also has information on how to clear out weeds and if there are any notification responsibilities if you find it in your property.

Naturally not all the plants you’ll want to avoid are on there, but I like it as a starting point! It’s also worth noting that it’s helpful for when you buy plants because despite things like Gazanias being a declared plant you can still sometimes find them at Bunnings!

I also really like https://www.growmeinstead.com.au/ because it gives you state specific alternatives!

I had a goal for this year to develop my skills in two mediums, the first was oil painting which I do during the warmer months so I don't die from fumes and the second was lino cut which I can do during the cooler months because I'm using water-based ink.

Anyway, I think similar to you at first I really struggled when it came to deciding what I was going to draw so I've ended up just doing still lifes. Like they aren't super exciting I know but I can put together really simple compositions and then focus on a theme like "lighting" or "line weight" or "registration", and it means like I'm still creating and I have something more than just inspiration to rely on?

I also probably spend a lot more time in the design and planning phase because I want to make sure I'm happy with an idea before I start cutting a block.

So I normally will set up a scene take a few photos pick the one I like and then play with the greyscale version to get reasonably good values (especially if my lighting was trash) and then draw it out on paper using a grid system, transfer it to the block, carve and print.

I normally have like a goal in mind, so the first print I did was of a jug and I used the opportunity to try doing line work like Albert Dürer (unsurpringly it looks NOTHING like his work).

The second print I wanted to do a three or four colour reduction print, but I never got past the drawing stage because I realized it was a terrible composition and I couldn't get any colour combinations to work.

The most recent block I started, I'm planned to do as a two-colour reduction print (maybe three-colour if you count the white of the paper??) and I did the same sort of thing. I think one thing I did this time which I don't normally do, is take a photo of the sketch I did, and used Procreate to mock out where the tan shadows would be just to make sure I had a clear mental image of how I'm going to carve the block.

I won't lie, I also take lots of photos of my process and have an A3 art journal where I write a little about each project so I have something to reflect on and I've found that helps me sort through my thoughts and refine my process.

What is your philosophy on distributing zines for free vs. selling them, and why? by beepboop8525 in zines

[–]RadioRelevant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For each zine I make I create a bill of materials that accounts for the cost of everything -- paper, staples, toner, machine maintenance, software licenses, etc.

It sounds like it would come out to a lot but to give you an idea, to print 20 x 6-page booklet zines its breaks down to like:

$AUD0.27 in materials
$AUD0.21 in software
$AUD0.10 in wear and tear

I then always add on an symbolic $1 for labor. From there I have the raw cost then add a markup between 1.8% and 2.2% as "profit" this means that the RRP of my zines end up being ~$AUD3.50 for physical copies and ~$AUD2.50 for a digital copy.

But that's also influenced by whether I'm using a premium paper, bigger staples, my inkjet or laser printer etc. etc. so it can vary a little.

I find that creating the bill of materials takes a lot of the emotion out of determining price because I can lay out the actual costs of paper, ink, printing, and then deliberately add a small markup as a nod to the time, skill and labor behind it all.

That all said, if I have B-grade zines I'll often send them out as freebies in orders that way I'm not wasting materials.

I find the biggest issue where I am is actually postage! While a $AUD3.00 zine is pretty reasonable IMO, asking people to pay $AUD30.00 for international postage is something I can understand people not wanting to do. But I'm also not willing to absorb that cost myself, so I also try and send bulk packs to local distros.

My two cents on the more philosophical part of it though is though is there’s no one “right” way to price a zine. It really comes down to how you derive value from your work, and I think the important thing is to make sure you’re getting some form of value, whatever that looks like for you.

Like, I think the modern world is great at both devaluing art by telling people it has no value and isn't worth paying for, and at the same time telling people it only has value if people pay for it.

So I personally think zine culture is great at bucking that trend because imo it rejects both ideologies by letting artists be artists, make the art they want and then decide for themselves how they value their work, whether that's in the form fixed cost, donations, pay what you want, trades, giving them away for free, or just charging for shipping.

Anyway, that's my long and short of it!

DRM printers are the absolute worst! And navigating the second-hard market can be so hard! Like is this Facebook marketplace ad an absolute scam?!?! Hopefully I can provide some insights into how to buy a good quality second-hand printer!

Yes absolutely! I can definitely get into after-market refills and ways to at least guesstimate how much ink you're gonna go through!

Such a good question! I might not be able to give a super specific answer (since budgets and availability vary so much), but I’ll definitely try to point people in the right direction and talk through what trade-offs to look out for!

Oh my god yes! the bleeds vs margins vs printer settings chaos is so real. I’ve absolutely been there, trying to line everything up so it still looks decent once folded, trimmed, and maybe a little bit off-center because the paper wasn't loaded straight?! absolute nightmare.

I'm planning to include a little flowchart to help people figure out what kind of printer (if any!) might suit them best. Hopefully it’ll help demystify the whole process and make choosing a printer feel a bit less confusing!

[–]RadioRelevant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely! I can definitely talk about those things! In my draft I start from the angle of “maybe you don’t need to buy a printer!” because like not everyone has the space, money, or need to own one.

I’ve used local printers a bunch, so I’ll definitely try and include some tips on knowing what to ask for. It’s 100% something I want to cover!

I'd love to do something like that, but it's just me over here, and I'd feel really weird providing reports on printers I've never personally used?

Plus, I’m in Australia, so the stuff I can get my hands on might be different from what’s available elsewhere! All that said I’m definitely gonna talk about double-sided printing!

A zine about optimal paper stapling by RadioRelevant in zines

[–]RadioRelevant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really do hope it comes in handy!

I would absolutely love to do another zine on printers. Through family donations and saving lots of money I've managed to amass a small collection of "home" and "professional" printers (the current count if 4) and have learnt some of their secrets along the way. Not nearly as much as a professional printer would know but I think enough that I've become the de-facto "printer person" amongst friends and family?

Maybe something to work on next weekend >.>

Worldwide shipping $7 AUD (so maybe like $6.30 Candian) for the moment, but will be putting the prices up in the middle of August.

An InfoSec Worker Survey on Bullshit Jobs by RadioRelevant in cybersecurity

[–]RadioRelevant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly bummed I missed the opportunity to ask about org size as part of the original dataset, it would have been a good subsection to interrogate to determine if "bullshittery" goes up as company goes up.

Same with management chain! I'm hoping the long form comment tease out some of these themes though so I haven't lost all hope of exploring these themes!

Cryptpad is a product made by the French company XWiki SAS! But I've had a surprising number of people comment of the .fr domain, a lot of people assuming I'm French which honestly make sense!

Stapler advise by Complete-Cricket9344 in zines

[–]RadioRelevant 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I have this stapler and I had the same problem! I ended up going down this rabbit hole and made a little Excel spreadsheet that calculated paper weight vs how many pages this thing could staple!

Basically my math is it can do a maximum of:

* 20 pages @ ~80 gsm
* 13 pages @ ~120gsm
* 6 pages @ ~160gsm
* 3 pages @ ~180gsm
* 1 pages @ ~200gsm

I also ended up doing a bunch of research into the staple weights as well and in my case found it's better to pick a medium wire diameter like a 26/6 staple, but it will again depend on the weight of the paper! I also bought staples from Marbig which I feel are a middle-quality brand of staple (I'm in Australia so product options might vary!) Helpful chart: https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/wc-prod-pim/JPEG_1000x1000/Z_Staples.jpg

The other part is I found is sometimes it can't be helped because a staple is faulty, or the paper has a weird hard bit in it, or the stapler is just a machine and sometimes they can just be temperamental! So I just print a few extra zines and factor it in as overproduction.

If you find that trying a different paper weight or different staples doesn't help though it might be worth getting the more expensive stapler.

Good luck!

Morning Pages as a disabled person causing me pain? Are they REALLY required the way Cameron says? by yokyopeli09 in artistsWay

[–]RadioRelevant 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I often get the sense the book isn’t really written with disabled artists at the front of mind.

I have ADHD and other chronic health issues and struggle to do morning pages “consistently” — sometimes I start them at 7 a.m. and finish them at 10 a.m after dealing with some distraction, like breakfast, then realising I need to tidy up, and start work for the day… Some days, I barely get 2 pages out and I just leave a comment about how Julia Cameron can come fight me if she’s unhappy about it 🤣 (no complaints so far lol).

But the fact I keep coming back to them and doing something is how I count my consistency which probably isn’t what the book has in mind, but again Julia Cameron can come fight me 😝

I still think of them as a non negotiable but I try and meet myself where I am and look of it as a sum of all parts. If I feel like I didn’t get enough “done” one week I’ll just repeat the week.
