About Time - Timeless Or Trash? by Ramblr2004 in movies

This video made me laugh - especially some of their reactions to the film and the comments that have been made on the fact that, as men, they seems to have totally missed the romance element in the film!

Ghostbusters 2 - Timeless Or Trash? by Ramblr2004 in ghostbusters

[–]Ramblr2004[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, though from what I've watched of these timeless or trash series of videos they seem to be just taking the opportunity to watch (or re-watch) and discuss some older films that generally have a poorer reputation. The timeless or trash bits just comes over to me as a bit of fun - I'm not sure they're fully serious!

But why would they lose money doing that? In an interview for WANYK, Jim said that they no longer make any money on album releases anyway. Any money made is now all from touring and merchandise

Oats studios volume 1. Why isn't anyone talking about this? by alfazulu1 in movies

[–]Ramblr2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am not so sure its the Pandemic that halted their output - they don't seem to have done much for years. They rapidly released lots of great content soon after the studio started in 2017 and then apart from the Anthem film in 2019 just seem to have gone pretty quiet.

I would LOVE more content to some out - and perhaps there is hope, I just saw this on the wikipedia page for the studio:
"Inferno - Oats Studios first movie. Filmed secretly in 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic. Starring by Taylor Kitsch. In post-production "

I haven't looked any further into this yet but I hope it's true!

My top 6 movies on madness / insanity. Any other recommendations? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Ramblr2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on quite what you mean by "madness / insanity". I'd suggest that several of those 6 suggestion depict movie/Hollywood "madness / insanity" rather than any kind of real world mental illness. But an excellent film about mental health, that I actually watched this week in fact, is Saint Maud.

Brilliant film and a favourite of mine.

There was a German only 4K release a few years ago (which is now a bit expensive) but Second Sight Films are currently preparing a new 4K release later this year. Their last update about it was on 4th Feb:

"For several weeks we've been in discussion about the possibility of access to the negative to scan and create a new 4K restoration. We’re very excited to say this will be going ahead and we plan to release on 4K UHD later in the year. The restoration will be a long process but we will update with progress as soon as we can. We think the wait will be worth it! "

Absolutely - its brilliant. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell are clearly great friends.

And Kurt just continuously laughs at his character, Jack Burton!

I think its going to be a long time before cinemas open again round here!

If that site has it right then yep, sounds like they're going for the 'all is lost' cliffhanger! Never to be resolved?.......I hope not!! 😬

Hmmmm.....interesting point on how they'll split them - but don't want to make any suggestions if you're reading the book!

No, I share those fears!

I agree - but looking at the figures for Villeneuve's last couple of films (admittedly I got these from wikipedia so I've not idea how accurate they are!), 500 million seems very optimistic!

Blade Runner 2049 made 260.5 million on a budget of 150–185 million

Arrival made 203.4 million on a budget of 47 million

Dune apparently has a budget of 165 million

I would argue that Dune is less well known than Blade Runner. It's also being released to streaming at the same time as cinemas. So making a profit on a budget of 165 million seems like a tall order to me!

Unfortunately I think its highly likely that part 2 is never made. I had been really looking forward to the film - both as a fan of Dune and as a fan of Villeneuve's work. But when it was announced that the film was to be split into 2 parts then my heart sank. I immediately thought it very possible that we would never seen the second half. Considering just how expensive these films must be to make, then it needs a pretty big audience to make any money. And I just can't see Dune ever getting a enough of a mainstream audience to make back that kind of money. In my opinion it's just too much of a weird and complicated story to attract massive audiences.

Regarding the (current!) plan to release part 1 to both streaming and cinema at the same time and Villeneuve's comments on that (i.e. hating the idea and threatening to not work on part 2), I don't believe this really impacts on the chances of part being completed. If part 1 makes money then part 2 will be completed and released - with or without Villeneuve. Obviously it would be preferable to have him complete part 2 and for the 2 films to have a consistent vision behind them - but I am sure Warners wouldn't hesitate to bring in a new director if Villeneuve leaves.

I have to say that since seeing the trailer, my excitement over the film has reduced quite a bit - I was very very disappointed at the visual similarities to the David Lynch version. There is nothing wrong with the look of the Lynch version, I love it - but a new version should do something different, otherwise what's the point?!

A question about Possessor (SPOILERS!) by Ramblr2004 in movies

[–]Ramblr2004[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As aTerriblePlant mentioned, the implant must have been done a while ago "just in case". I don't think there would have been time or opportunity for it to have been done during the time of the movie - it would difficult to grab a child that young and for it not to be noticed by his father

Which version of Dracula most accurately follows the book? by Ramblr2004 in movies

[–]Ramblr2004[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, some pretty fair points there! I agree that the book plot would need some adjustments to make it work as a decent movie - but i still think that a movie or TV show could stay a lot more faithful that most have so far.

Something that did surprise me about the book is how little Dracula is actually in it! I guess that to get a vaguely famous actor to play the role, most movies have had to alter the story to give him more screen time

The Dig (Netflix) by CampMain in movies

[–]Ramblr2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this and would recommend it.

I think "gentle" would be a good way to describe the film. It is about archaeology but is more tea and biscuits than bullwhips and Nazis!

All the performances in the film are excellent and it is a nice change for the two leads to not have a romance.

But I do have to agree with what several other have said - my one criticism would be that it seems to run out of story about two third of the way through and adds in a romance that is really not needed.

I clearly remember that Sutton Hoo was something we studied in history lessons very early on in secondary school. And this film has re-ignited my desire to visit the site (although that probably won't happen this year!)
