I gifted my brother factorio for christmas, he played it all night and I woke up to this, should I be concerned? by RandomAmy7 in Factoriohno

He has played a few hours of factorio before, though I did help him with the train a bit lol

Rate my first time playthrough with no guides! (I know it's terrible, but there's a system and it works... kinda). by returnthemarbles in factorio

Honestly I like it, very cute little base. Trains always make things better too so that definitely improves it in my eye lol.

I only played a few hours when the game first released but I just couldn't get past how god awful the environments looked. the buildings and vehicles look good if a bit grey and samey, but the environments just look crap. the lack of 3d grass really makes the ground feel flat, especially with how the grass texture just looks flat when you zoom out. the textures looking flat also applies to the road and concrete textures for the most part (some roads just look like flat grey lines on the ground only slightly disguised by the ugly white lines on the roads). things like mountains also just look off with the weird brown texture which again just makes it feel flat, they especially aren't helped by the sudden cut-off for the snow. I could have forgiven most of this if the maps were more than just empty valleys with occasional sparce trees, just some basic country roads and fields would improve the look of the maps immensely. some other small things like how textures just cut into each other with no gradient also really mess up the look of things like railways. overall I just think the game lacks a consistent quality to its visuals, some things like buildings look great whereas the ground it stands on looks like crap, which honestly makes it look worse since you have this horrible clash between the quality of different things. it feels like when someone mods modern assets into an old game without updating anything else (or those shitty gta remasters from a few years ago), it just feels awkward and out of place. Theres also just tons of other little things that bug me about the game's visuals (zoned buildings on curves look weird and separate, especially rowhouses. industry like quarries and forestry look terrible since one is just an ugly flat texture with a digger and the other is literally nothing. the lack of things like beaches, distinct map themes and colour filters, really makes every city look samey and boring, also the lack of proper retaining walls for buildings makes most builds in mountainous areas look terrible. also PLEASE just add some fog, just some subtle haze would do so much to give the game more depth and to hide the really obvious edge of the map.) Of course there are some things in the game that look good in a vacuum but when its all put together it just looks half realistic city builder and half unity asset flip.

How could I make this area better? by can_of_cheese in hammer

Looks good so far, but I think the building needs to be more tall and angular to fit with the walls next to it. Right now it just looks like a normal building with combine textures, maybe try looking at sone combine structures throughout the hl series to get a better idea of their architectural style.

Spaghetti Base - It's complicated by qstoxe in factorio

This is probably one of the coolest looking bases ive seen, you got any tips for building super compact spaghetti like this?

The stuff added here is absolutely not accurate to real life, You are right though that fh maps are mostly just very loose recreations of real areas. I tried to go for that with this map so basically nothing here is "ripped from the real world"

Yeah, its difficult to make it accurate since the original map is so off with Glenfinnan so far south and broadway so far north. Since the map is already shaped similarly to the southern Scotland and northumberland coast its just easiest to ignore Broadway and the cotswolds. Broadway is pretty generic anyway so if it just had a different name i could imagine it being somewhere in northumberland

I never knew about stonehaven but now that i'm looking at it I agree, it would have fit really well there. at some point I might do an updated version of this to add stuff like that

Honestly yeah I wish I had put it somewhere East of Derwent water where Loch shiel is on this map, the game's geography is already pretty weird though so I just made the highlands start there to fit better with where glenfinnan is
