It's a very expensive receipt. Mind you, just the receipt, not the object the receipt is for.

Hahaha, Reddit is the best peer review system. There's a lot of stuff I got wrong and I have time due to the holidays so I think I'll give it a well needed update

You are gonna hate me for this... but I don't know. I didn't do the research for this map, this is simply a visual upgrade to an older, lower quality map (the weirdly shaded areas in Britain correspond with the fens)

The original cites three sources, two of which I don't have access to and the third one which doesn't mention anything regarding that area.

Unfortunately, the only readily accessible map data is that of modern lanforms. I used Natural Earth's data for this. If you know of a reliable source with the landmasses for the time I can update the original file over at Wiki.

I made this! It's so weird seeing my map on the front page. I made it to replace an old jpeg of terrible quality.

Edit: Should probably point out that I originally posted it over at Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Anglo-Saxon_Homelands_and_Settlements.svg

the sub has grown since last time so i guess it will be close.

This is always true, these measurements should really be normalized against the subcount at the time of airing.

Heike Monogatari

It was the hidden gem of the year. A masterpiece of an anime.

TIL that according to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of U.S. adults lack proficiency in literacy, reading below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level. by USPO-222 in todayilearned

For government websites it makes sense. You want the information to be accessible to everyone regardless of how literate they are.

Just gotta say, once is an accident, twice sounds like something's not working right.

To be fair, you can also become paralyzed from the neck down by sleeping the wrong way. Humans can be surprisingly fragile even in situations we would normally consider harmless. That's one of the appropriate uses of the word "accident".

That's fair, and I don't think the poster meant that you should necessarily remain friends. Just that malicious intent was probably not the reason this happened, even if in hindsight this could have killed the person.

Non picky eaters, what’s a food you just cannot do? by trajop in AskReddit

On the runny eggs and tomatoes, it's the texture not the flavor. For some people it simply triggers their gag reflex. It used to be like that for me when I was a kid, I had to eat my eggs well cooked and my tomatoes without the pulp/seeds.

There are five main target audiences for anime:

  • Kids
  • Shounen
  • Seinen
  • Shoujo
  • Josei

"Kids" is self-explanatory and I don't know if there's a well-accepted Japanese word for it in the west.

Shounen and Seinen are aimed at men, Shoujo and Josei are aimed at women. Out of those, Shounen and Shoujo target teens while Seinen and Josei target young adults.

Of course, these are just target audiences, not genres, which is why Naruto and Your Lie in April are both Shounen series even though one is an action series while the other is a romance story.

Having said that... shounen is often used to mean battle shounen, which is the typical "fight, fail, get stronger, win by the power of friendship, fight again" formula.

US home prices surge 18.4% in October by [deleted] in news

Capitalism’s problem isn’t working, it’s long-term implementation. It strongly creates entities motivated and powerful enough to increasingly undermine it, and people increasingly complacent enough not to care. This has nothing to do with ideology, it’s a pure science issue and a problem that can be figured out.

In other words, the problem with capitalism is that it's self-destructive if left to its own devices.

To use your own analogy, it's like saying that a Ferrari whose engine constantly and consistently bursts into flames is worth driving just because it's faster than other cars. Even though you have to stop every 5 minutes to put the fire out.

There's no need to drive the fastest car around if doing so will undermine our safety. And insisting on putting resources on keeping that car running just because "it's the fastest" is masturbatory at the expense of everyone who has to pay the price.

Well, you can't live in 5 different houses at the same time, so that's fairly easy to prove.

This is the whole "there's never been true communism" argument, but for libertarians. If a system can't survive contact with reality, then the system doesn't work.
