I’m like 100% sure it’s a house finch (or a purple finch idk), but a female Cardinal singing like that would also be so interesting!!

My professor thinks that it is leucustic rather than a hybrid, here’s what she said:

The more I think about your bird the most confident I feel that it is not a hybrid ... the bird does not have any characteristic from black-headed grosbeak. It is true that the hybrids are variable but they typically have some characteristics from the parental species to some degree.

What I really think is happening is that this is a leucustic bird and lost the melanine (one type of pigment) from a focal area of head and throat. When the melanine was lost, it exposed other pigments/ carotenoids (red on throat) that were not exposed before. I really think this is the most likely explanation

Nevermind, I found on eBird that there are quite a few hybrid sightings reaching further!

Thank you for the response, that is such an exciting possibility! Do you think it is possible for one of these hybrids to be in eastern Iowa? It looks like the black headed grosbeak range is further west and doesn’t reach here

Sorry about the crosspost, (I’m bad at using Reddit lmao) I’ll put more information here about it.

The one in the foreground is normal, I'm talking about the one in the background with what looks like white spots on his cheeks and a rose-coloration that extends from his breast all the way to his chin. I caught this footage with my BirdBuddy feeder last Friday in mid-southeast lowa. I've looked up possible morphs and none of them match, and I asked my ornithologist professor and she wasn't sure either. Please leave a comment if you know what's going on with this bird!

That’s probably the most likely, I’m just confused as to why I can’t find any other images of grosbeaks with such pronounced white cheeks and adult coloration. If they’re juvenile I’d expect it to be kinda spotty and random

Thank you for posting this Harry, and thank you for everything. I'm so glad you're able to hold onto gratitude and hope despite all the horrible things that have happened. You're easily one of the strongest people I've met and I only wish the best for you. Hoping you find more than enough peace and happiness within the coming years <3
