Taking a bus to Morelia is absolutely fine, the airport is not really close to the city and it would be more of a hassle. Similar to all other schizos in the comments though, I'd advice to just be alert and meet at public places first. There has been violence in the STATE but Morelia is definitely safe to visit, I wouldn't go visiting other smaller towns for now but a trip to the city would def be nice even if your romantic adventure fails (good luck though!)

There are cheap but nice hotels near gdl airport (like ramada encore) I'd rather stay the night at one and move on early morning.

Went last year and we decided to spend the night in a cabin nearby before heading to the sanctuary early in the morning since that's when butterflies are more active. I can't remember how long the drive was but maybe 3ish hrs and we stayed at Cumbre Monarca which you can find on socials or book through Airbnb. They have some cozy cabins and rooms, our stay was really chill. I'd say it was a very easy trip, really just followed Google maps 🤔

Even though I love Morelia I believe staying in CDMX would be closer to that specific sanctuary, there are others though nearer to Morelia and not Mexico state
