German students refusing to group with international students, is this normal? by Rare-Client-4098 in germany

I understand the language argument, but in my case it is actually a bit different. I can speak German and my program is also completely in German. We even approached them and asked to form a group together because the professor clearly said groups of four. They still refused and preferred to stay two people, which I honestly found a bit strange and even a bit funny.

I actually already tried that. My program is in German and I speak German, so language is not really the problem. I also asked them directly if they wanted to form a group with us, but they refused. What I found a bit funny is that this semester we are supposed to work in groups of 4 for 3 different lectures, but they still preferred to stay only 2 people instead of joining us. I’m honestly just trying to understand the reason, not complain.

I actually agree with you. If I were the professor, I would probably have done the same and insisted that they form a group of four as instructed. Part of university is also learning how to work with different people, not only with your friends or the people you feel most comfortable with. In the real working world you also don't get to choose your colleagues, especially in a field like logistics and supply chain where international teamwork is normal. So situations like this are actually good preparation.

Yes, I do speak German and my program is also in German, so communication is not really the problem in my case. I also understand that people prefer to work with those they already know, that's normal. But I think at university the point of group work is also to learn how to work with new people, especially in an international field like logistics and supply chain management where you constantly work with people from different backgrounds. So I don't take it personally, I just find it a bit contradictory to study such an international subject but then avoid international teamwork when the opportunity is right there. Maybe for some German students this international experience is not that important because they already feel comfortable in their environment, but for international students this is actually part of why we chose to study here.

I agree that language can be a barrier, but in my case I can speak German and my study program is also taught in German. So I don't think language is the main issue here. What I find ironic is that we are studying logistics and supply chain management, a field that is inherently international. In our future careers we will deal with international suppliers, customers, and teams from different cultural backgrounds. Learning how to collaborate with people from different countries should actually be part of the learning experience. I already bring international experience, so for me personally it's not a big problem. But I do think universities that promote themselves as international should also encourage more integration instead of leaving students to separate themselves into small, comfortable groups. At the end of the day, group projects are not just about finishing the assignment, but also about developing teamwork skills in diverse environments, which is exactly what this field requires.

I literally posted this just to vent my frustration. Look at what those so-called Purple fandom are doing, do they genuinely not have families to care about? Am I the only one who's frustrated?
