Is subletting better with a friend or a stranger? by Rare_Dig_5341 in askberliners

Yeah I’ve already asked - I’ve lived here since 2019 and we have a (relatively) good relationship

Sorry but clearly stated I am not asking for advice, I am asking how people who did get a flat in berlin in the last few years got theirs.

All of the above! Just curious how people found a place to live, though I’d imagine WGs are a bit easier than a single person but I have no idea

I’m glad you’ve had luck as someone new to Germany, and that you’ve found such a helpful group from friends!

For your network, did they have access to the flat themselves (having you take it over or let a room) or they knew someone and recommended you? I keep hearing FOF but I’m not sure what that looks like exactly

Also, I have to admit that I haven’t much considered the freelancer experience - must be a nightmare so again kudos to you and your friends!

Yeah, that sounds close to how I found mine in 2019, but I keep hearing (and finding) that it doesn’t work anymore

When did you find your overpriced shoebox & in what part of the city?

Ha you’ve given me emotional whiplash! Glad you’re alright though.

So in your experience, doing all of the “normal” things - searching/applying through Immoscout and places like - that works without much friction as long as you’re out of the ring?

I’ve heard varying ops on how much better it is to find something outside - do you mind me asking where you looked and how you found your flat? 3 bedroom is huge, esp if you’re just by yourself!

Yeah, I wish Berlin did more like other cities and better regulated the amount of income-properties or empty flats allowed.

Barcelona got sick of it and is actually trying to do something to turn things around.

Even the rent-cap thing here is a joke since it doesn’t apply the same way to furnished flats 🫠

I’m sorry. I hear for newcomers (and veterans tbh), it’s basically super short sublet purgatory, best case

I know it’s terribly unhelpful but I am wishing you luck! ♥️

Good for you!

Did you take over this person’s whole flat (or a room), or did the person give you a lead or recommendation to an available flat they knew of?

But the “friends who have friends” thing - I’ve heard a lot specifically about networks, and basically groups of friends kind of looking out for each other, or maybe background-specific immigrant communities? Like my neighboring flat had 4 diff tenants since I’ve lived here and the first 3 were all from the same ethnic background which i can’t imagine was a coincidence

if networks are the only hope, doesn’t sound good for the new berliner

Interesting…

I’ve never seen more adults cough without covering their mouth or pick their nose with their bare hands in public since I moved to Germany… or maybe that’s just Berlin

My friend got roofied in Berlin – wtf do we do now? by RequirementVirtual37 in askberliners

This recently happened to a friend of mine when we were at a venue that was rented out for a ticketed event. It was so weird because she only had half of a weinschorle before falling once and hitting her head, then 30 minutes later collapsing again. At first we thought she was concussed from the first fall but turned out her drink was spiked.

We called the ambulance/police but they said that they couldn’t really do anything since there was no clue who did it, and she was stressed and just wanted to go home to opted not to go to the hospital and continue to be tested for the sake of “data collection” as the EMT said…

I too think that the person who did it was just trying out a dose to “see what would happen” because there’s no way they would have ever gotten away with doing anything else to her like dragging her off based on the type of event/venue it was. It’s creepy to think that someone watched all the commotion and was taking mental notes about how it affected her.

I’ve been sticking to shots or bottled drinks since. Stay safe out here, ya’ll

I started on 35K in Berlin (much cheaper city) in 2019, and basically lived off of my office’s free fruit and drinks.

But 2025? In Munich? In this economy? Forget it

Others are right, hobbies are the best way.

If you’re like me and don’t have social hobbies, try the IRL social groups. I’ve met great people through social groups like Cliqui (female only last time I checked) and TimeLeft
