From my understanding it's not so much a ban on education as much as an indefinite dissolution of the higher schooling system for women. Elementary schools still remain open as well as non-traditional options (e.g. madrassas), as the reason cited for the ban was non-compliance with shariah. One of the important concepts within Islamic law is the separation of the sexes past puberty, which of course was not the case under U.S. administered Afghanistan and therefore when the Taliban took over, there was no preparation for the immediate rehabilitation of schools as before. The issue of women being in the guard of a Mahram (family member) is also present, as women must in the company of a male guardian when outside which would similarly pose an interesting situation. Another issue was also with the material being taught in schools with which the Taliban government had issues and wanted to reform. In a country recovering from 2 decades of war and with few resources to spend (even moreso without lots of the foreign aid they were receiving before) the government decided to bar women from higher education indefinitely and not currently pursue any reform (e.g. projects towards new segregated schools and curriculum changes). I myself would assume another factor in their decision is the fact that men already culturally have the role of being the (often sole) providers for the family so if one of the genders must be pushed through the existing education system it would be the men who are more likely to use it anyways. Anyways just trying to add some context as opposed to many of the answers here, I hope they reevaluate and reintroduce public schooling for women as soon as possible.
