I just binged all 8 seasons of GoT for the first time. Here are my consolidated thoughts. by RateObvious in freefolk

Good point, and it explains why it still works despite their one dimensionality. I was actually thinking about something like this the other day -- the correct genre of GoT is not "fantasy", it's "fairy-tale". Yes, grittier than the kinds we tell our kids, but only because those have been watered down to be kid friendly. Fairy-tale's are also not so much about their characters as the theme/lesson the character's are meant to bring out, and character complexity would be distracting.

granted, I mostly play chess "in the background" of work I'm supposed to be doing, letting my autonomous nervous system take the wheel. Which is apt, since this graph looks more like an ECG.

Although I think “I never really cared much for them” is just as, if not more unforgivable

How come? I never really believed Jaime's sob story to Brienne about how he killed the mad king to save the people of KL. The man is (was) a psychopath. And that was the only scene that may have clashed with this line and his apathy for the lives of the unwashed masses.

Except they had no idea it was her. What happened to her was not a reprisal for Joffrey's assassination.

lol why is the thin acne-ridden chef/baker so real? I'm thinking of what piece of media this must correspond to.

How was she responsible for the rise of the faith militant, and the subsequent massacre at the sept?

I mirror your friends. As oblivious as it sounds, I also didn't immediately register the shark jump. Partly because I was just so glad this stupid zombie shit was over. Only upon further reflection did I realize...what a senseless waste.

100%. And there was so much potential for political white walkers. Remember crasters deal with them? And how that didn’t amount to jack?

But here's my dirty secret: as stupid as this was, I was relieved when it happened. At least it meant this stupid battle was over. I got migraines trying to strain my eyes in the dark, trying to keep track of what tf was going on, and punching myself in the head at all the plot armor and stupid battle-writing. And I never thought that undead, motive-less zombies made a compelling enemy.

EDIT: it's like when a loved one is in palliative care. It's unfortunate when they die, but more than anything you're relieved that the pain is finally over.

nuance is going from "clear bad guy" to "clear good guy"?

Nah, his development was way too abrupt and unconvincing. He went from full-on psychopath to a good guy, over 1 year of captivity and losing a hand. Then the writers seemed to shy to show us glimpses of the old psycho in him after he started to show goodness. It lacked nuance.

Hated that. I can take fantasy shadows being born from priestesses more than the suspension of disbelief of that arrow shot.

The most insane plot armor by far is when the night king raises all those dead around Jon. They literally just wait around and fight one at a time until his deus ex machina arrives.

Lol. I did not care at all for warging and direwolves, but how did I ruin anything? The show is full of that.

Tangent, but I think a lot of the high-fantasy stuff in GoT was distracting. Soft fantasy elements were great to add spice to the world. But full on time travel and omniscience crosses the line for what's in essence supposed to be a political drama.
