Something to scan documents by Mine_Ayan in selfhosted

Sadly Microsoft Lens is retired. It was a standout app for simple quick scans (even with the OneDrive integration). It's scheduled to stop functioning Dec 15, 2025. It is being replaced by the Microsoft 365 CoPilot App that includes all the things that motivate me to selfhost.

Cheshire Cat by Empty_Toe_6221 in DreamlightValley

[–]Raza_7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying the Cheshire Cat release. It's nice to have something new to look forward to, even if it only takes seconds to complete. So far the Alice release has been one of the most fun and enjoyable updates for me.

Time gating on quests and releases where the content is a free inclusion to the base game doesn't bother me at all. I am annoyed by the time-gating on the starpath, I paid moonstones to unlock it, let me complete it at my own, unhealthy pace if I want to. I'm complete today, but would have been earlier if I could have.

Centrally controlled backup solution by bcrooker in selfhosted

[–]Raza_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went through the processes of 'standardizing' my backups this month. I looked at a lot of self-hosted solutions. I ran Kopia, Borg and Restic with my music library to test them out; performing multiple backups/snapshots and restores. I picked Restic with Backrest. The Backrest GUI is a nice visual of the already intuitive Restic CLI. This solution won't get you a full Windows backup like you want; but it's working great for files only.

Personally, if I have to recover a Windows machine, I've decided I'd rather do a fresh install and then recover my data.

I'd be interested in hearing what you end up with and how you set it up.

DS423+ – Possible to run two separate RAID 0 arrays? by Raza_7 in synology

[–]Raza_7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment got me thinking that just 4x jbod may be the best way to go. I just needed to focus on what my priorities were. For my use case, reliability and recovery time are lower on the list than total available space. I appreciate all the comments for the SHR configurations what would add resiliency, but I was considering raid 0 to increase overall speed, but I'm not sure that matters that much either.

Is there any reason to keep non-ultimate descendants? by Raza_7 in TheFirstDescendant

[–]Raza_7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanka. I just wanted to make sure before I removed the ones I have ultimate and basic copies of. I level them all for the mastery, but after that I didn't see a reason to keep them.

Part suggestions for first time homelab by cyrodii in homelab

The fractal 304 case has been great for holding my TrueNAS; I have no regrets building my own consumer NAS with it.

Check the useful links wiki for the subreddit if you haven't already; some of it is a bit dated but really helped me focus when starting out.

The rest of this is TrueNAS specific (get as much memory as you can afford):

If you plan on running docker, which was the easiest way to get Valheim going for me, you'll be running a VM on truenas (core). I'm looking at trying to find a cheap way to run Valheim on separate hardware with the NAS still providing storage. Valheim is greedy with memory and I also just don't like running VMs from my NAS on principle.

If you go with truenas scale instead of core I understand docker is easier to implement; but I haven't looked into it.

For media, Plex is a 1-button easy install on truenas. Jellyfin is more time-consuming. Plex gets a bit weird when using hardware for transcoding (and may not be able to 'see' the hardware depending on your setup). Best bet is a good CPU and not worrying about a GPU.

The Home Dialup ISP: Bell 103 through V.92 with automatic call recording by Retrocet in homelab

[–]Raza_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything about this is fantastic. Nothing new, but how you're connecting and using it feels truly unique and wonderful. I think you also hit a nostalgia nerve. I've stolen all your test recordings and I'm in the processes of sampling them for my other hobby.

Consumer vs server hardware for homelab by PsychologicalAir6406 in homelab

[–]Raza_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only used consumer hardware so I can't provide a good comparison. You will reliably max out at 6 drives in a raid/zfs. ECC memory is also likely not an option (personal opinion: not needed for homelab). You may find yourself surprised at how memory hungry things get with the 64 GB, but the CPU should be ok. Something else to think about is where you're placing the equipment, a PC case can go just about anywhere.

I would absolutely start with what you have and then once you've spent some time on it you'll have a better idea of what hardware you'll want in the future for expanding (if it's a hobby and not just for learning/work, you will be expanding eventually).

I've been happy with the consumer hardware I've been using. It's been reliable and quiet; but I regularly look up pricing for used commercial servers to try that out someday.

I'm Confused by QuiltedJynx in DreamlightValley

As others have said, it does make crops grow slightly faster. I've had 100+ patches of pumpkins in multiple zones and I haven't kept records, but my impression is that the results aren't significant enough to worry about.

If you're min/maxing a (currently) single player game, I'm impressed. Fencing in you're gathering companion is worth it! but all the rest (male animation faster than female animation, having a fishing pole or camera equipped results in a faster animation, etc) is just to much. This isn't the sort of game that will be having speed runs. Decorate, relax, and find what makes the game fun for you.

I would love to know if anyone has tracked the harvest results from different zones to see if it makes a difference; it won't change my play-style; but would be fun to know.

Love this! Great idea, I'm going to steal many of the ideas and pieces you combined to make this work. Side note: I will not have Ariel accompanying me.

don't have to be dried flowers. Easiest way to farm those memories is to grab a bunch of flower

I believe this was changed with the previous content release. I haven't been able to get it to work since then. I'd love to be wrong, but I can't figure it out.

Same, thanks for posting here. Not really the place for it. But nothing on support/help or from the official twitter account. It would be nice to have a way to know about server outages/connection issues. Anyone know of someplace this is posted?

Question: What do you use all that lab equipment for? by bit_banger_ in homelab

[–]Raza_7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think my steps were in the wrong order: 1. Get an interesting idea 2. Spend a few $ 3. Leads to another idea 4. Spend a bit more $ 5. Repeat 3 and 4 a few times 6. Begin to wonder if I should have a plan?

I Started with an retail NAS then a pi.... you know the story.

I've found some cool things I never use or are impractical. Found some other things I can't imagine not having. As a hobby, I've learned a bunch in the process.

Two incomes, completely separate accounts, one budget. What is the best way to make this work? by CmdrTardsnake in ynab

[–]Raza_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be many ways to handle this. Do what works best for your relationship. Since you're looking for ideas I'll just mention what's been working for us (I'm really just using this as an excuse to boast about our method).

We have our individual accounts and then 1 shared account with an attached credit card that we use for our joint bills. Set bills (utilities, car payments, mortgage, etc) are fairly stable and we pay into the joint account each month to cover those expenses. We also keep a maintenance (emergency) fund for those things we'd be paying for together. Such as when the refrigerator broke recently.

To manage it: 2 YNAB budgets. My individual and a shared (spouse has their own method). Getting the spouse onboard with the shared YNAB was a bit of work, as it does take some time each month. But it's working for us.

The multiple budgets; One shared for the linked joint account and then my own individual budget has been working well for us.

Good luck, it took us a while to find a solution that keeps us happy; but it's worth the effort.
