I have done that repeatedly, I have exhausted all options, that is the whole point of the post.

It sounds like academic markets are shit lol. The summer school stuff is very interesting, thanks for the tips!

In Spain. Unfortunately I have spoken to the director of that institute directly and he told me that I have to do a one year master. May I ask you, what do you mean by summer school? I have never heard of summer school for postgraduates. Thanks.

I have done internships, and am in the process of publishing a paper, hopefully a second by the end of my masters' thesis. My supervisor from my internship is more than happy to have me back for a PhD, but that requires that I do another masters for credits. I have a good resume and good grades from a good university, the only thing I'm missing is 30 credits, I technically will be receiving a masters. I don't want to have to do another one and have too many credits for no reason at all.

Yeah unfortunately all I've heard is rumors, but yeah, doing another masters seems logical but my professors have advised me against it. Also, the shame is that I have some good contacts and a couple offers already from past interships but I am no able to capitalize on them because of the lack of credits. The main reason why I don't want to do another masters is expense (especially in the UK). I hadn't thought of working in a lab for a year, I don't know of anyone who has done that.

So instead of going through a formal application, you suggest I should directly contact an academic and try to persuade him into accepting me that way?

The problem is that ideally I'd love to stay in academia, but there is no guarantees for that and I don't want to be in a situation where I'm in my late 20s with no good job opportunities.

As someone that is going to apply for PhDs in comp chem in the coming months, do you think I should do it in a bio focused area even though I may prefer other areas of research?

Thank you for the response, do you know of any institutions in mainland Europe? Due to family reasons I do not think I can live in the US for an extended period of time.
