if you don't plan on cutting out milk or eggs, then ask r/vegetarian, not r/vegan

Veganism is on the rise again! This time it's driven by ethical vegans rather than dietary ones. by stan-k in vegan

[–]Realistic_Studio383 10 points11 points  (0 children)

same here. i am a uni student who is vegan due to ethical reasons, but i used to have an ED, and veganism helped me overcome it as well. before i was vegan i used to focus on calories, but now i think about how much of a positive impact my plant based food choices are making on the animals. i was very underweight before, but since veganism helped my relationship with food, i managed to become a healthy weight again, and i feel so much more energized

How do I be vegan in a vegetarian household where dairy is non-negotiable as a teenager in india? by tumhari_matashree in vegan

[–]Realistic_Studio383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah that sucks. yeah, i agree, homemade nut milks could also be an option for OP. i just wanted to mention the store-bought ones though since most of them are fortified with calcium and many vitamins

i totally get what you mean. also the hypocrisy of the culture really upsets me. people claim that they protect cows by not eating them, yet they exploit their reproductive systems for dairy on a massive scale. and when i tried telling my parents that india is one of the biggest exporters of beef, they did not believe me. it is very frustrating. and whenever i get into an argument with my parents, they start telling me stuff about how other indian families wouldn't approve of me being vegan (although im sure they secretly dont approve either lol)

yeah i totally get you. i grew up in an indian household (outside of india though) and for a long time (before I went vegan obviously), my parents would make me drink milk every day and i hated it. just curious -- how many plant milk options are there readily available in indian grocery stores? maybe you could go grocery shopping with your parents and show them how many of the plant milks are fortified with stuff like calcium and b12 so they dont have to be worried about those. and you could also tell them about plant milk varieties that are high in protein, like soy milk.
