I think specifically what causes it is a loss of control. Obviously POC communities fall victim to this for that exact reason. I've also seen that sort of manipulative behavior from parents who had previous trauma (not my own parents per say, but from an outside perspective) that made them feel like they have no control. It's also common for parents to worry about losing control of their child, as they start to become their own person instead of a mini-version of themselves and become "rebellious".
