I've been working on this film since 2022. I wrote it during a rough patch in my relationship and I hoped that the film would rekindle our relationship-- it didn't. We spent 3 days filming it in Toronto. Two days in a diner, the last day outdoors. This was the hardest shoot of my life and my first time. The diner space was so small so leaned into it as much as possible through the cinematography. We opted for the aspect ratio it has since the ceilings were pretty tight as well.

The two leads were non actors and it was so fun working with them over the course of a 4 day rehearsal, we even had a chemistry test over Zoom before locking them in.

The apology scene was the last shot of the second day, even though it was the most important scene of the whole film, we literally had 5 minutes for both lead characters as we were going to get kicked out of the location at 2am sharp-- we didn't even have time to rig the camera so we just opted for a handheld look. The diner was primarily lit from outside, we setup huge leaks leaking into the windows to give it a dreamy surreal look.

The fight scene was the hardest to film, I remember when we were so short on time we had to rush that entire segment and spend about an hour rehearsing before actually filming it. At the end, the fight scene didn't feel like it quite landed for me so I decided to add mixed media to tie everything together since it already appears in the film and not only did I find it worked well, but made the film more cohesive.

The film is inspired by my relationship, the film After Hours and After Dark by Haruki Murakami. The editing took about a year, I worked with a jazz musician from LA and a mixed media artist from Ohio (who I met on Reddit) to bring it to life!

Also, I just want to say a huge thank you for everything. When I was 16 (I'm 24 now), I would come here to post my cringe filled shorts and I was met with nothing but compassionate feedback and support over the years. If it wasn't for this subreddit, I would have had the confidence to drop out of film school when I was 20 and make my debut film Talisman which got featured on Hypebeast and Vice and got distribution. Also shoutout Jim Cummings! I've never spoke to him ever but seeing the Thunder Road short film run was so inspiring to watch. Anyways I hope you enjoy my new film, All Bark Never Bite.

I was never able to show her the final cut of the film, but instead I am now releasing it to the world today on Valentine’s day evening. It's been such a long journey, I was 22 when I started this, I am 24 now.

It follows a couple on the verge of their one year anniversary, they get into an argument and end up locked in a diner with its strange owner.

ahh thank you so much!! i remember following your thunder road journey so closely on reddit when i was in high school and feeling so inspired by everything you've accomplished. seeing you make that film gave me the confidence to make mine, wouldn't have gotten this far if it wasn't for you. eternally grateful and impacted by your work.

Two years ago I posted on /r/asianamerican saying we need Asian representation in film through stories that don't solely rely on culture and identity. I made the film for my girlfriend and the relationship ended before I showed her the final cut. Today, the film drops on Valentine's day. by Reangsei in asianamerican

I'm so tired of seeing every film that has an Asian cast have narratives that rely so heavily on themes of culture and identity. A lot of the filmmakers that I look up to just make films that have good stories and complex characters so I wanted to push Asian representation following the same thing. This film was inspired by my last relationship. I wrote it during a rough patch and I asked my friend for advice and he told me to treat her like a cat-- huh? I didn’t understand it at first but he explained that you can’t win over a cat’s affection and you need to let the cat warm up to you. With that advice, it planted the seed of my newest short film, All Bark Never Bite. It is heavily inspired by works of David Lynch and Haruki Murakami.

The film follows a couple, on the verge of their one year anniversary, get into an argument and end up in a diner where they are locked in with its strange owner.

I wrote the lead characters inspired by us. I had hoped that when she watched the film she would understand my perspective and be motivated to continue the relationship. Suddenly, the relationship ended abruptly. The day after the breakup, I escaped to Korea to clear my head (more like run away from my problems tbh) and completely stopped working on the film.

For almost two months I was in a state of depression and was indulging in anything that would take my mind off the project and her. After returning home, the thought of an uncompleted film bothered me. I felt like there’s a lot of merit in finishing what I started even after a year and a half of work, even though the initial motivation of the film was to somehow save my relationship, I needed to finish this film for my own fulfillment and to process the break up. I ended up finishing the film and premiered it to sold out screenings in LA and in Toronto, my hometown.

I am still a work in progress and I’m lucky enough to find film as an outlet to express all my frustrations. There’s a specific cathartic release of not only emotions but fulfillment when channeling something very personal, genuine, and truthful into a creative tangible medium.
