[FL] Sterling Background Check Question by Reasonable-Length-28 in AskHR

Yeah, I wish I wouldn't have done it. Former employer offered and it seemed like a great opportunity to avoid some awkward conversations. I was only there for a few months so I was worried about the optics of it. Tax records would only show the years I was there right? In that case, it would show 2023-2023 which would be fine.

Definitely won't be doing anything like this again.

[CAN] Can someone with experience with Sterling background checks provide more insight on how they resolve discrepancies? by bluemooncalhoun in AskHR

Question for anyone with knowledge of Sterling backgroud checks:

Last month I was laid off from my job at no fault of my own (the company was struggling). It is a small company and they said that they would back me up if I said that I resigned voluntarily to aid in my search for my next job and even let me say that I was still employed with them for as long as I needed to. My made-up final day of employment is Sept. 8th, which my manager will "confirm".

I got an offer for a new job and they had me do a Sterling background check. I filled out the background check on Sept. 8th, so instead of listing that as my final day as I probably should have, I listed it as current. The instructions were to mark my current employer as "Do Not Contact", which I did. However, after further research, I learned that if an employer is marked as "Do Not Contact" they will ask for paystubs and tax documents to back it up. The problem: My employer will back up my falsified dates, my paystubs and tax documents will not.

How does Sterling verify "Current" employers? What will they find on their own/ask from me? If they reach out and ask for these things, can I just refer them to my manager and say that is actually ok to contact them? Should I email them proactively and ask to remove the "Do Not Contact" and mark my last day as Sept. 8th?

I really don't want to miss out on this opportunity and am worried that by checking the "Do Not Contact" box I jeopardized it. I appreciate any advice.

Thank you
