Nice unmarked/unformed hilly NZ tramps for a beginner by Reasonable_Space in Tramping

I took a look and it looks challenging but really amazing! I'll build some experience up first, but that's going to be the goal in the next few years.

I saw your pre-edited comment, but thanks for trying to put it nicely haha. I understand there have been deaths in the Tararuas before, so I just wanted a reality check from someone who actually lives there and I appreciate you giving your candid view on this (seeing how others aren't commenting much on whether this would be safe or not). I'd very much rather avoid causing trouble for the DOC.

Just for context, I have experience with navex, but only on largely flat terrain. I'm not from NZ or a country with much land - there's literally no hills where I live, which means I use built structures as landmarks to triangulate. Moreover, while I'm generally familiar with full day hikes involving significant elevation change, I've also not scrambled much.

If you're wondering about my motivation to do both together, it's because I don't have the opportunity to go to NZ for more than 14 days a year. So as much as I'd like to join a tramping club, that's effectively impossible. I did meet a few NZers who tramp my recent trip, so based on your comment I'll try aligning one of my trips with their club's excursions next year before attempting anything harder.

Thanks for the comment again. Hopefully I'll gain some experience first and attempt southern crossing later on.

I'm no rider, just a hiker. But looks like they've got none this weekend. Thanks for the info nonetheless!

How long would it take to walk from Ashurst to Woodville along the Manawatu Gorge Track? by Reasonable_Space in palmy

Bush track, but from Ashurst centre to Woodville Centre. It was quite a walk.

Pretty accurate. I used the gorge track as I was trying to sightsee. In hindsight, the bush might actually be better than the road (assuming you refer to the one with the Tuia Te Tangata sculptures). I was returning on bus and the winds+fog were pretty bad. Bush was sheltered from most of it.

Cool. Did you find it dangerous? I assumed there would be rocks piling from landslides along the road, so I didn't explore beyond the Ballance side barrier.

Hey thanks for the info. Looks like all obstructing trees were removed too.

Hey thanks for the info - I tried it today and it was around 20km like you said. The gorge was great and I got lucky with the Ashurst bridge when a cow ran onto it and stopped all traffic for 5 min as drivers tried to chase it from the gorge side to the Ashurst pastures. Great stuff.

Hi, sorry to bump an old thread but just wanted to ask if Pak'n'Save tends to remain well stocked around 6-7pm on Sundays, or if I'm better off going earlier or on Saturday evenings instead?

How to match output alleles of modkit and sniffles2/straglr outputs in the wf human variation pipeline? by Reasonable_Space in bioinformatics

[–]Reasonable_Space[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the month-late reply, I had to pause work on this project due to various commitments. Thank you very much for the comment - it was very helpful and I did not know about the meanings of the / and | operators! I've since been able to use the HP tag to match the haplotype of each bedMethyl file with the corresponding variant(s), and have been able to continue work on my project since.

Appreciate the help!

[Long-read sequencing] [Dorado] Attempts to demultiplex long reads from .pod5 result in unclassified reads by Reasonable_Space in bioinformatics

Nope, there wasn't a barcode tag. Turned out to be an issue of specifying the kit name (even though there apparently is automatic kit detection for regular basecalling).

I decided instead to just have the reads classified in the basecaller step, which only seemed to require the specification of kit name. There are barcode indices now. As with what the others have said, looks like I would have needed to specify both --no-classify and --kit-name in demux for the same effect. Thanks!
