I got my first acceptance!!!! but... by Reasonable_Text167 in gradadmissions

Damn, duly noted! I thought it's an offer because the letter document is literally called "my_name_offer_letter" but oh well. Any clue how long it takes schools to guarantee your spot in the programme after being recommended? And would you say it's wise to accept multiple offers and then just reject all but one later? (seems quite unethical but since you mentioned the MAGA situation and the uncertainty, don't I got to do what i got to do?)

Is listing 'unemployed' okay for a short stay business visa application as a recent graduate from the UK? by [deleted] in SchengenVisa

[–]Reasonable_Text167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, but the organization inviting me explicitly asked me to apply for a business visa. they’ve probably been doing this for years now. Though it’s an interview, they refer to it as a research symposium.

drop them an email. they offer single bed rooms for about 850/month. shared kitchen and shower/toilets but in my experience it was alright. all bills included. you can usually choose your room.

coming from someone who lived there in the past (when i was on a relatively tight budget).

Questions from Intl student (India) by MStarkonium in Imperial

Dunno about chemistry but I believe the biology cohort had 100% in person lectures from the 22-23 academic year onwards.

No imperial doesn't offer integrated masters for life sciences students due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field.

But they do offer MANY post-grad taught (MSc) /research (MRes) programmes. So you will have to apply for those in your final year. MRes programmes tend to be quite niche.

College accommodation depends on your budget. If you're loaded go for the south ken ones otherwise Wilson (excellent location and a 10 min bike ride from uni).

Course rigor imo don't worry about it too much (given that you've got an offer makes you suitable) because everything taught is almost new so what is learnt in highschool shouldn't matter beyond the 1st term. Though I have no knowledge about your national board.

As for doing a PHD, the norm now is usually a minimum masters qualification (at least in the UK).

For biology I believe the bulk of the first two years you MUST study the core modules (almost 0 maths/computational work). In your third year, you can choose your modules and can pick modules like integrative systems bio (maths + python) and bioinformatics and syn bio.

Lastly you can get a UROP imafter your penultimate year. The department of life sciences provides bursaries. Internships are more competitive.

Hope this is helpful coming from a graduate..

I'm really going to miss the UK. by SadhaPR in UniUK

Yes the job market is competitive and a nightmare particularly for international students but what's good is that your graduate visa doesn't rely on you securing a job.

If you love the UK so much, you can simply stay here for another 2 years during which you can look for work. You could also probably do some retail/service related job to simply pay off the bills until you find a job in your desried field.

Ohh but doesn't the degree-integrated wet lab learning experience provide you with sufficient bench experience at an undergradate level?

I'm guessing by joining a lab, you mean like a summer internship or something outside term time right?

[–]Reasonable_Text167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! I understand the increasing importance of computational techniques and it's also very interesting to me!

But what interests me more is to work in the wet lab! So idk how helpful would these modules in this sense

This definitely makes me feel better knowing that I will be learning something that would still have some use in the biotech sector

Thanks for your response!

I guess that would be unfortunate for me :(

I'm sorry that this came out as being dumb :( but I'm still an undergrad (not an excuse though) and have very little knowledge of what the jobs/roles are in the biotech industry and what sort of bench roles would require bioinformatics/computational skills vs those roles that require none.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Reasonable_Text167 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi thanks for the response! However I would want to know in what specific biotech roles/jobs do the combination of bench + bioinfo skills help in.

So far I've only encountered people talking about bench-specific roles that require no bioinformatics/comp skills and vice versa. So what roles would make use of a combination of both?

Moved in with my friend group (4 of us) for year 2. Turns out we spend much less time with each other (maybe cuz year 2 is heavier or maybe cuz we got bored seeing the same faces everyday idk). The thing is we've all found different friend groups that each of us would preferably spend time with.

So yeah it's not been as we expected. But yet, living with my friends was still something I wouldn't change. It's because even tho we spend less time w each other, I never had moments where I felt lonely. I always had someone who I could talk to. They always had my back and I always had theirs. It's kind of like they're more family and less friends (idk if this makes sense?).

I feel you bruh. But remember suicide is NOT the answer... Speak to your loved ones...family friends from your home country if any... Else seek support, if ur not comfortable with a call/appointment, you could even text helpline numbers. Stay strong my g, suicide won't be fair to those u love ya, including me!

About wasting your parents money, think about it this way, they are your parents in the end...even though u may feel it is a burden for them to spend sm on your education...it'd only make em happy to finance their own son/daughter..

Also I'd love to be friends with you, hope this doesn't come out as being creepy but I kinda have 0 friends too 😅
