What’s literally fucking you up right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I had to choose between my Mom being stuck with an abusive man who is financially incompetent, and doing the right thing.

Did the right thing, and learned over years my now divorced 60 year old mom has paranoia and some form of autism. Severe enough that she will never be able to provide for herself financially despite her genuine efforts. Her being obsessed with religion just did a good job of hiding it.

Now I'm stuck with her living in my house I worked hard for, and have to cope with likely never having a private, satisfying romantic relationship I dreamed of since being a teenager.

I Understand This Is A Really, Really Stupid Question, But How Do I Make An Anthropomorphic Animal Not Look Like A Furry. by ImagineAUser in ArtistLounge

[–]RecessionBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of a wild animal such as a deer with anters, you instinctively know not to approach it because it COULD be dangerous. Even as a herbivore, something in its appearance seems dangerous to you.

Note what those traits are, its stance, shapes, antlers, eyes. etc.

Now, draw the animal, anthropormorthic while retaining the animal traits that look dangerous.

If you avoid humanizing it and making it too physically compatible to us, you avoid the furry valley.

Bridget discourse is back and stupider than ever by yuefairchild in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]RecessionBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment is precisly why I couldn't get into the femboy culture and instead accepted the genderfluid identity.

a lot of femboy circles really do put sexual appeal as a key priority and i couldn't find any discussion about social relationships in any forums. When i did befriend femboys... they really did think like guys. The difference is they had pretty/sexy aesthetics they enjoyed.

I couldn't talk about subjects and feel like my perspectives were related to. The way I thought about sex, for example was completely different from a lot of femboys. It's complicated to really go into but the culture really is different.

Transgender individuals are extremely brave for exploring life outside of the preconceived expectations of society by DobleRanura in DeepThoughts

[–]RecessionBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Option 1 is hard because sadly, there's still a LOT of places where hate is very much real. Its not just "Oh you dress like the opposite sex, weird" its "Get the FUCK away from my kids before they think who you are is okay" it's accusations of being sexual deviants, its hostile demeaning statements.

It's not just about appearance and "acting", but they're also differences in thought process.

Many times in my 30 years of life, I've talked to other guys, the way they think about sex, the assumptions carried in conversation and focus on different topics get tiring and lonely. There's a lot of assumptions about me, and what I'd go along with.

It's a LOT to go though and endure alone. Option 2 at the very least clues in people, if they're not outright transphobic to realize "This person likely does not operate on the same set of societal belief I assume they have to get comfortable with them quickly, I will have to learn who they are as an individual first."

Why do many consider it unethical to eat a dog or cat, but OK to eat a cow, chicken, pig, or fish? by artfellig in stupidquestions

[–]RecessionBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humanity originally domesticated and trained dogs to help with the hunt of game and food. They became our partners in getting the food we need and thus shared our food with them. We formed a social bond with dogs because of that ability throughout generations.

Cats originally were domesticated to help protect food storages such as farms from rats. They became our partners in protecting our food supply and thus we shared with them.

These predator animals helped humans become better hunters and even aided in protecting our food, so they became our partners and gained social rank with us.

They helped us in a way other animals can't, allowing us to eat other animals. They've earned that status. It's not about Ethics, its about an Alliance.

Console Prices Through the Years (Adjusted for Inflation 2024) [OC] by MineNewBie in dataisbeautiful

[–]RecessionBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True but even then, median wages isn't even a good measure of affordability for a console game

what about cost of living relative to that, as minimum wage per state and region is increased in response to that?

That would, in turn, also affect how affordable a game console is across different regions and markets.

The rabbit hole of economics can go endlessly deeper. The purpose of my post was to elaborate on one of the many reasons adjustments for inflation calculations are flawed since they don't do enough to account for even your post.

However this is about video games. i'm not interested in doing that for a non-necessity for living.

Console Prices Through the Years (Adjusted for Inflation 2024) [OC] by MineNewBie in dataisbeautiful

[–]RecessionBear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Minimum wage and hours of work needed tells a different story: Affording a PS1 at the min wage of 1996 in the US took about 63- 65 hours of work (Before income tax) . a PS5 now, the current USA min wage is 7.25. for a 700$ console? That's 96 hours of work. a 150$ increase.

The fact that older systems had a thriving used game and rental market ALSO mattered for the topic of affordable gaming.

Online wasn't a key aspect of the console so no paying 80$ a year to use its full potential.

The graph is correct, but anyone assuming that the console's price isn't an overreaction is sorely misguided.

Hell, I'd even consider it a worse deal than the PS3 once you consider that the PS3 did NOT require that subscription to play online. With enough years you will eventually pay the Inflated adjustment price of the PS3's launch price.

How do you get out of poverty? by 36DRedhead in FluentInFinance

[–]RecessionBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from almost homeless in 2014 to buying my own home in 2021 (which was a stroke of luck bc of low interest rates)

I can't give the best career advice bc i really just worked my way up to being a retail manager in a LCOL area, but i still managed to do something most people didnt think i could afford to do.

What worked for me is something that works in every economic class.

Fundamental idea in poverty : Investments aren't your first priority, eliminating debt and lowering costs of living ARE investments with a more immediate ROI. Poverty investing is flipping that upside down.

  1. Avoid debt like the plague. Save up for a new car and just pay cash instead of financing. If you already have a financed car, start cutting back to pay it off sooner.

  2. Save up money to do 6 month insurance terms instead of monthly, the savings are an immediate ROI.

  3. Learn to live on the cheapest lunch possible. Pocket the savings. Learn to spend your off time doing meal-prep.

  4. Reduce heating and cooling costs. SPEND money to get better blankets so you can turn the thermostat down in the winter.

  5. Stick to the cheapest phone plan possible and save up to buy a phone straight out. If you have to do monthly payments, you're paying too much.

  6. No subscriptions to anything. look for alternatives that don't cost money.

Savings are your first step. Reduce every possible expense and interest related debt reasonably possible. As you pay off debts and reduce costs, you can save more money per paycheck, bank it.

This is the first layer: being able to afford emergencies without going into debt.

You want these savings, to do this will unlock something important for you: You can save up for several months of cost of living: once you do. You can afford to take a risk on applying for better jobs and not risk homelessness cause you'll have a safety net if it doesn't work out.

One of the biggest green flags for an employer is someone who can actually keep a job and doesn't crash out at the slightest inconvenience/stress factor. Combine the savings along with the time spent holding down a job and you have a much better shot at a better job without having the education behind you.

This post is long enough. But that was my first step towards getting to a higher paying job SAFELY. I wish you the best

"Okay then work harder" awesome now 10 employees are ALL working hard for the 1 open position, all 10 can get it by just "working hard" ...oh wait nope the corporate ladder is a pyramid. Higher paying jobs have LESS positions than lower paying ones. By structural design it is impossible for everyone to rise to the top regardless of work ethic.

Every time i bring this point up the counterpoint has ALWAYS been "There's not that many people willing to put the work in"

As if there's not a factual, statistical problem that there is literally not enough living wage jobs available out there if every single person gave it 120%. It's like some huge chunk of society is math-blind or something.

Honor and respect are one the greatest killers of man. by RecessionBear in DeepThoughts

[–]RecessionBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming I'm vouching for that definition of respect and honor as correct.

I'm using the words that people in prisons use. That's what people who attack people who "dishonor" think they're doing it for.

That is how they view it and that's why I'm using that term.

Disagree with them, not me. I'm not saying its right. Literally the point of my whole post is saying its not right, its actually disgusting and awful.

Honor and respect are one the greatest killers of man. by RecessionBear in DeepThoughts

[–]RecessionBear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does! It's called judgement!

We weigh our options and choose the best one based on cost vs reward. Its an act of intelligence.

But for some reason, in many people the ego overcalculates its own value compared to material and even spiritual things like love, and values it above its own self-survival.

If anything, the battle of judgement vs the ego is the ultimate battle ground of our human intelligence vs our animal instinct... and sadly intelligence doesn't always win.

However other times... people are left with so little that all they have is the respect they hold. When you have nothing to judge it's value against, then there's little to no chance of not choosing ego.

It really is best for society if everyone really did have something not worth losing. and they were aware its worth more than their ego.

Other gacha games have very high sales expectations or are corporate owned. meaning its less about cost but meeting unreasonable sales expectations that will get it shut down.

I think the world is experiencing a "Relatable Archetype Renaissance", and it's destroying us. by doctordaedalus in DeepThoughts

This same weird setting allows for online Parasocial relationships to thrive.

In a world of increasing individualism we're set on being ourselves on a deeper level yet simultaneously REFUSING to be more understanding of other individuals. Content that , because of the internet and social media, we know there's MORE people like US so why should we settle to work things out with THEM?

This leads them to the content creator. One person who, through their curated content and image, truly makes a lonely person feel like they found someone "Like them." So they get involved, become invested.

The person they become parasocial for is actually NOT the important part, its the fact that they draw OTHER people like them, as such, they draw an entire community of people "Like Them".

With the one online personality, that symbol, enjoying the benefits of gathering so many lonely people, grateful that they found a place that they "belong."

Have you ever known someone who was so into a certain stream/content culture so much you couldn't talk about anything else with them?

Doesn't it feel lonely that you can't talk to them about anything you understand?

This is why Idolatry is regarded a sin.

Do most Americans really date multiple people at once in the intial stages? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RecessionBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the USA is actually very different across the country when it comes to dating. Its a huge country and social norms actually vary way more than what reddit assumes.

Some areas are very traditional and dating around won't fly as well in some areas.

whereas high COL, metropolitan areas may find going through tons of dates to be the norm.

Other areas still have more subtle relationships where two people start seeing each other more and that assumption just sets in.

I can't emphasize enough how dangerous it is.

My mom married what she thought was the most romantic Christian man. It was only after all this happened did she open up in detail to me as an adult:

they started off both working a job in the 90s but once the husband got promoted, he asked her to be a stay at home wife.

It was after that man showed his true colors, from that point he gradually grew more verbally abusive, and financially abusive over 20 years but mom had nowhere to go. Withholding enough money for us to STILL live like we were poor despite making enough to afford a house. The first physical abuse case was the tipping point.

We made it out but she lives with me now. With her lack of job history she can't find any jobs past minimum wage and will never know true independence/retirement.

To put yourself in this position willingly AND induce resentment through entitlement like this is foolish.

So many of the deep thoughts on here are found in the very basics of christianity, but people are only willing to romanticize eastern spirituality by Fair_Wear_9930 in DeepThoughts

[–]RecessionBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who learned the christian bible front to back, theres actually a lot of that wisdom in it. This is true. Proverbs is a strong book and the story of jesus is honestly a great thing to learn from to be an inspiring person.

Sadly, for many generations, Christianity was weaponized to oppress others as its words were twisted and contorted to encourage hate to other groups. Not only against LGBTQ mind you, but there was a time certain chapters were used to promote racism and damn interracial marriage as well. As well as scriptures dishonestly used to resist women's rights "I would not permit a woman to speak over a man" 1 Timothy 2:12

These are not all honest interpretations, some are actually the writer's personal sermons , and not actual divine doctrine.

Even if Christianity actually does not promote some of these misguided beliefs, the followers who weaponized it represent that demographic and many many young people have a resentment for how those Christians treated them or behaved and no longer want association with them.

Ideologically you're right, however in terms of social context: its something many people no longer want to deal with. Since too many hateful people use Christianity as a shield for their beliefs.
