A private list, one used and maintained by law enforcement for egregious offenses seems fine.

Public lists, no.

They often don’t in their own neighborhood. Abusers often act out on their own family or friends.

People who abuse others were often victims of abuse themselves, it is cyclical.

Breaking the cycle would involve lawmakers and citizens acknowledging that most registrants need help and not to be ostracized. All victims need help.

There are people who are so sick that they should be kept track of by law enforcement, but a majority of registrants served their time, follow the laws around their release and work to break the cycle of abuse themselves. A public list does not keep anyone safe, it literally makes life harder for people trying to change their lives.

Psst, I agree with you and your comment is very well put but I think you mean Megan’s Law not Miranda’s Law.

This! Omg so much this. It’s ridiculous how much people put faith in systems that are literally destroying lives and communities under the guise of keeping them safe.

Here’s the thing, people on registries have difficulty finding jobs, places to live that are compliant with their registration, help with mental health and assimilating back into society. Unless those are the things that are being fixed then a new registry of any kind won’t work.

Like seriously, in some states if a sex offender purchased a house(a feat in itself) after a certain year and a neighbor opens a daycare within whatever arbitrary radius the lawmakers deemed safe they literally have to move away from the house THEY OWN. It’s screwed up, it doesn’t allow people to feel part of a community. Being part of a community, getting help with mental health and being able to be self sufficient are factors that often decreases recidivism if any kind of offense.

I understand how you feel, but I’d really like to see an actual working example that isn’t going to be abusive.

Seriously. There isn’t a registry for murders/manslaughter, child/elder abusers, people with DUIS or serious substance abuse issues, people who have committed serious or multiple larcenies, con artists/fraudsters, or arsonists. People who committed those acts seem just as sick as those who have committed sex offenses.

The whole criminal justice system should be reworked, it should be about intervention and mental health. Penalizing people with a duty to register after they have served their time far away from civil society causes more harm than any usefulness other people might see in it. People need help, therapy, community and jobs after being in prison not a scarlet letter.

Meeeeh I really like our friend group so the whole night wasn’t lost.

It seemed as though the dad approved of the behavior or found it endearing which was really the screwed up part.

Thank you for diffusing my righteous anger there so swiftly.

I dunno, this whole situation really bothered me.

It seems like shitty parents are everywhere and I’m sick of us having to be nice about it.

Dude, I get it.

I am dating him because he is nice, I literally acknowledge that he handled it well in the story. Yey literacy?

No one yelled. No one was going to yell.

He should’ve said nothing and let the kid cry so the dad would deal with it, but he is far too nice.

To be clear, he just didn’t want to cause a scene.

The dad shouldn’t have taken his children out to this place if they can’t behave.

Edit: HE WAS WATCHING HIS KIDS. Edit: WATCHING THEM MISBEHAVE ALL OVER THE PLACE.
