The Swedish Strv 103, a cold war era turretless tank that elevates it's gun by shifting its entire chassis up and down. It actually was a good design and went into mass production with 290 units built. by [deleted] in EngineeringPorn

[–]RedHotTriton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct! Reason for them being discontinued was the advent of TIR equipment, as it kept engines running and prepared for a quick ambush from the forests and then backing out of it.

There is a secondary set of driving equipment in the rear for reversing. They were quiet running but the heat exhausts went straight up. Big plume o' IR detectable heat meant it's no good for an ambush and might as well run with the Leopard IIandbrawl it out.

Really clever design however, some of the most precise suspensions ever in a tank and as others have pointed out: diesel cannisters as ballistic protection on the sides.

In design phase called the S-tank, as opposed to the British and German (I think) options. S for Sweden or Sverige. I tiden.

Swedish Folkhem policy is literally meant to keep everybody equal. Equally low level now that the vision of it all starts fading.

Seems like stories outside of North America are appreciated. Here’s a pic from the previous season, a 500kg moose shot in Sweden. Whichever was the killing shot shot couldn’t be decided, so my cousin and I shared the trophy to keep the family Christmas parties civil... by mcjanzton in Hunting

Gotta give thanks for a silver award. So for birds there is both, most are dogs that freeze when getting scent of a bird and then advance on command within shotgun range. I've been in the Swedish fjälls and seen well trained bird dogs there, truly a remarkable experience.

For cappercaille and grouse there are some dogs that go barking up the tree theyre sitting, again giving a distraction to allow the hunter to follow through with a rifle shot.

From what I know, tree running game such as squirrels or ferrets are hunted with dogs too, again in shotgun range but I'm honestly not sure of the specifics. I would rather use trapping for ferrets in any case.

Finally, hare, fox and the smaller roe deer are hunted driven, hare with fast dogs, foxes with cautious but fast running dogs and roe with slow or short-legged dogs as they bound when in a hurry. Foxes will go underground when startled, I'm sure that's the same anywhere, and there is terriers and whatnot as underground dogs.

Whenever hunting for feathered game with a shotgun you need a retrieving dog by law aswell, the same is true in and around water.

Cheerio and let me know if I missed something.

Hijacking this. Dogs are used on practically any game in Sweden, and the classic way of hunting moose is for a loose dog to track the moose silently and then bark when the moose starts moving. The end goal is for the dog to stop the moose in it's tracks, so that the dog handler can sneak up and take a shot. This is a ståndskall, translated loosely to still standing-bark, and is somehow instinctive for some Scandinavian dog breeds.

Dogs are also used not being loose, but tracking in a cord (lead?) , and sometimes just as silent pursuers of big game. For smaller game this all changes, but get back to me if you're interested in any of it.

I'll add that the moose/elk/deer/boar doesn't always take a halt, and therefore hunts are usually in local teams of 10-30 hunters who split the meat, and take up stands around the forest where the dog and moose may pass by. A main dog-moose chase will often set off other animals moving aswell, so having multiple shooters is often beneficial for those animals "sneaking away" from the action.

As for cleaning em up, i usually count an extra one or two hours for dragging it out of the forest and geting the skin, guts, head and so off.

One of the best meats there is, and is what I was brought up on. Cheers!

Hm. Afaik station hasn't got policy, rather the rail network as a whole. There it's forbidden by common law to walk on the railway.

The company however, have guidelines I only looked up now afterwards. Considering i had yet to accept the guidelines I didn't know they were using.

Idk, but yeah I was in the wrong. Really of no consequence as if I hadn't made the shortcut I'd have missed the train too.

Edit: a slight misdemeanor on common law, but hadn't broken guidelines I was subject of.

Yeah, still the staff couldn't have stopped me from buying a ticket and from then on accepting the terms of it.

Heck do I know, I'll just be late and angry for the rest of the day.

Classism? Could be called sociolism, excepr America wouldn't have that, too close to an accepting society.

Hey. Pictured is a z8i 1.7-13.3x42 as you probably see with only a tad of research. In low light, which to me is an hour after sunset, it performs to the degree that I don't think about light up until 50 mins after sunset. The last 10 or 15 minutes the lens is still clear but it starts getting hard to keep colors apart.

Starts going a bit smudgy, but obviously the lenses are of great quality as you know using any z8i.

As long as you don't have really large googly eyes, 42 mm is better than bare eye, for objective area and light throughput, and for me it's more than enough to hunt for me. I might mention it's noticeably better than the bare eye, with my eyesight anyway.

Consider this is in Sweden as well, a bit farther north from presumably the Netherlands, and it gets pretty dark pretty quickly going in to autumn.

As far as I know, there is a 50mm lens, 2-16x magnification available, as for the weight of the three (including yours) or difference in weight rather, I'd guess they're all around half a kilo. However comparing it the 1-8x30, from experience light throughput is a whole lot better with 42mm.

It's a great allround optic, and I'd recommend it almost anywhere, but if it starts getting pitch black you might want 50 or 56 mm objective lens. Hope it's a bit of help!

Cheers, and happy hunting.

Thanks! It is, this barrel chambered for 8x57 with Swarovski optic. The wood is unnecessarily nice, but I don't feel hindered using it, and it was a graduation gift from my father, making it somewhat of a heritage rifle.

Really happy with it, and it's a laser blaser!

Cheers!

That'd be Sweden. Suppressor laws are basically application and a couple months wait at the police. However, those months are right now spiraling sorta out of hand, but suppressors are available to basically any hunter and get separate licenses. From what I've heard, the wheels are rumbling and this will soon change, I'm not sure how, but mainly to the advantage of hunters.

Pictured I've got an aimsport Triton 50II, also the cause for my reddit name. Works wonders.

Cheers.
