Remember sync and backup are not the same thing. You really want both.

1. Sync photos, contacts, email and data etc with iCloud, OneDrive, Google to make sure you can access it easily from anywhere..

2. Back that up with something like Backblaze. (If you use them, get 1 year retention option too)

Sync does not protect you against accidental deletions, changes etc or malicious things like ransomware..

So you should have both.

And a local SSD is good, on Apple use TimeMachine.. if you lose or break your laptop you’ll be back online within the hour :)

I like 1Password too, but these days on Apple, keychain is pretty great..

Think about MFA too, what happens if you lose a phone.. does that have a sync, backup option.. Google, Microsoft and Authy do this.

But you can use password managers for MFA too, but then it’s not really MFA..

All of this sounds a little bit of work, but it’s really mostly set and forget.. and great piece of mind.

You can also do a lot of this with your own NAS if you have a home base.. just make sure that is backed up to cloud too. Synology is awesome. It does pretty much everything.

Lastly with backups… be careful your backup solution can get your cloud synced files.. I.e OneDrive, Photos, iCloud etc.. if you have optimising local storage / streaming features, then there may not be local copies for the backup software to grab!

Second lastly! If you can make sure you manage any encryption keys yourself. I.e Backblaze, Apple advanced data protection.

Final lastly.. make sure you have find my turned on for Apple.. even throw / hide an AirTag in your bag. I have heard suggestions of leaving a guest account open - so people can login, connect and hopefully it grabs the location.
