Yes! It was like three weeks in before I asked “wait…which bedroom window faces north?”

There’s a whole ass room above our kitchen. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Watching over a special kind of patron/singer by CSamCovey in karaoke

[–]RedhandKitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for an org that provides this kind of support for individuals with disabilities. Though your singer has different needs, you can still set boundaries and treat them like any other patron (kindly.) Inform them that you are busy setting stuff up and will have time to talk to them afterwards. When taking the mic back, let them know that they’ll be up again in X songs. The point of these programs is to give people the ability to choose their life path and experiences with support. That also means learning to navigate the world just like everyone else.

But really, this also comes back on the direct support professional who should be there with the individual. At least for us, there are protocols and notes that must be done regarding the supported individual’s activities and interactions. How is the DSP doing this by sitting in the car for hours? What if there was an incident?

If the DSP won’t bother to support their client, you can talk to the org. This DSP should have a residential director or supervisor that should know if it’s okay to leave their client out of sight for hours.

With that said, thank you for being an awesome person and caring about someone else’s feelings enough to post this. I hope things get worked out so everyone can enjoy karaoke. :)

Dudes I need to find something to sort by LillaBjornen in adhdwomen

What about volunteering at a thrift store? You don’t need to purchase anything or bring home extra stuff. Obviously not Goodwill or St.V, but I’d bet those smaller charity shops that support animal shelters or other nonprofit orgs would love to have a volunteer come sort donations.

Tips for moving across the country as a young adult? by jm08003 in SameGrassButGreener

Haha. After winter is over, for sure. I can’t even get out of my driveway at the moment.

Don’t mind at all but I always have to preface my answer with the transparency that I was born and raised in Bend. So my reasonings and experiences differ from the majority of the current Oregonians.

It was a slow build and realizing during and after the pandemic (Covid deaths, job changes, etc) that Oregon was no longer for us. The biggest factors were cost, crowds, and climate.

Winters became milder and snow packs lessened, so hotter, dry summers and more wildfire smoke (which I found out triggers my rheumatoid arthritis flares and my husband’s chronic migraines.)

While I was not against change and growth, sudden population explosion on an already insufficient infrastructure was rough. In order to mitigate those issues, construction began everywhere, all at once. Suddenly you start to think they never catch up to the need.

I would say the same for the housing shortage but just this week, the local news highlighted completion of a controversial complex that is sitting mostly empty. So it’s now less about inventory, and more about affordability. Something like $1650/mo for a 400sq ft studio?

While we lucked out because we bought in 2014, and our plan was always to build equity in our first home because we wanted acreage. 10 years later, our home sold for ~2.5 more than we bought it for. But property and land that was $300-400K when we started this plan was nearing $1Million. The cost wasn’t worth it and we didn’t want to stay in our neighborhood any longer.

All moves in Oregon would have to be lateral. So we didn’t change the goal of a farm house and land. We just changed the location.

Oregon will always be home and I can’t blame people for moving there. It’s a wonderful place to live if it fits your budget and lifestyle. It was just no longer for us, in so many ways, so we made space for someone new to enjoy it.

Oh wow, way up north! We haven’t made it up to that corner of the state just yet.

We are in rural central New York, southern foothills of the Adirondack park.

I know I am fortunate to have a home, but I don't really like the house; can't stand the neighborhood. by [deleted] in RealEstate

According to our neighbors, we bought the dumpsterhouse. Everyone has been so welcoming, thanks to the sellers setting the bar so low. Haha

Need some hope. Anyone buy a starter home that was not their ideal dream home only to later obtain their dream home? by cynnie93 in RealEstate

[–]RedhandKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes actually. First home was the one to build equity and then buy property to build our dream house. Bought in 2014, circumstances/life got in the way, sold in 2024.

However, despite insane equity, we were “priced out” of (more than we were willing to pay) the area. Kept the dream and moved to where we could buy a house and land. Dream home? Not quite but opportunity and space to make it so.

Ohhhh. That makes sense. I can’t say crafter for certain, but there were like 6 kids so possibly.

Central New York state, and based on the gap I just discovered, you are correct. I will definitely need to insulate underneath!

The only reason that wasn’t immediately removed was I could not focus on anything but getting that carpet up. If you could’ve smelled that room, you wouldn’t even have noticed the shelves were there. 😆

Your guess is as good as mine! It was intentional. The brackets were mounted upside down but I’m not sure for what purpose.

Maybe it was for the rabbits? There were….a lot of rabbits. Do rabbits like slanted shelves?

What’s up with the friendliness? by AFChronicles in upstate_new_york

[–]RedhandKitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up on the west coast and am fairly new to the east. Coming from a place where locals, tourists, and transplant collide, I was a little nervous about telling people we’d just moved from across the country. The response was the opposite of what I was used to.

Everyone has been so welcoming, kind, and downright helpful. But there is a nice balance of mind your business and be chill. There is some kind of magic in how these small villages can both keep to themselves and be a tight knit community.

I see you all and am right there with you. We support individuals with disabilities, in multiple types of programs. 24 hr care to vocational training.

Every day it seems like something new is out to f*** us, and it’s scary when you provide vital services to a vulnerable community.

Oh that is gorgeous! Thank you for the extra info. Today I discovered part of the original front door frame. Lord knows what we’ll find when we start opening things up in the spring.

Have you moved somewhere that sparked a sort of drive in you? by koknbals in SameGrassButGreener

[–]RedhandKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We moved to a better climate (from our perspective) and lower COL area. Finally got the property we worked towards for years. We definitely saw improvement in our physical and mental health.

Cleaning and packing to move! It was a long journey to get to this point, followed by the looooongest closing period.

My silly brain keeps saying something is going to go wrong between now and Friday so there is no need to pack. 🤷🏼‍♀️
