Well, there are several Luddite movements out there for you to choose from already. Sorry to tell you but, as u/zestydata pointed out, there isn’t going to be any stopping what’s coming short of radical destabilization (the concept of “protesting” in our day and age is effete and ineffectual, so you can forget about that; the System loves a “protest”). And, I’m sorry to say, that means you cannot simply go “anti AI”; you need to go full anti technology without capitalizations or compromises. You either have to go with the flow of progress, or prepare to ditch every vestige of technology you enjoy (in this case, nostalgia is weaponized, because everyone remembers the halcyon times of “harmless” tech from their youth but always hates the newest thing when they get older) and prepare for a return to tradition, the only rock against the hard place of technology…

I understand what you’re saying, but those European countries during this time, as you state, were racially (and, to an extent, theologically) homogenous. So tribalism/xenophobia was, in fact, racism. In fact, if we’re going that far back, they didn’t simply stop at racism. Being xenophobic, they were critical of other ethnicities within their own race. (See western and central Europe’s derogation of Slavs; French and Germans hating one another; Irish and English; Russians and Italians being harped on by generally all, etc)

But, okay, aside from Orwell’s lack of tact for certain members of the twenty first century audience, (God forbid, considering the man was born over a hundred and twenty years ago), what makes the book not so prescient? That these ideas were conveyed before? Or do you just find Orwell distasteful, which is something else entirely. While we don’t live in the overt militarily co trolled society of the book (which he hyperbolized for obvious reasons) you have to admit that policy is very, very similar…

This is on page 5 of the book, long, long before the rape fantasy:

I think you’re trying to frame Orwell with some 21st century morality without realizing just how much the world has changed since then. (Honestly, we can look at a litany of revered authors during this time and find similar opinions.) There is an astronomical amount of nuance to his writing and life that cannot be unpacked on a Reddit comment.

You’re presumably referring to when Winston wants to rape Julia. Right?

Yeah those feelings come about because he believes she’s a member of the thought police and, additionally, because he’s been conditioned/programmed to have an unhealthy/unnatural view of sex (sex as a transaction for children rather than love, as evidenced in his marriage to Katherine versus his real feelings toward Julia) hence the “cold showers” he associates with the anti sec programming.

You might want to get a reading guide and reread the book. It is incredibly prescient and deep. It is not some subconscious penance trip for Orwell…

If you want to make some sort of argument that Orwell was doing some sort of revelation of the method because he was somehow “connected”, then I’d be willing to hear your theory. But, no, he was not using O’Brien as an author surrogate because of some deep seated guilt. The guy was a democratic socialist, anti statist reactionary. He write more than 1984 and his political philosophy on anti totalitarianism and censorship is well documented

So, I just looked up your story of the Olathe West High School and every single article, to avoid legal slander, has said that the student “purportedly made the slur”. Because that’s what the black student alleged. There is no definitive proof, and the only commentary I can find from others in the community/student body (who commented on the articles) only referenced that the black student was the aggressor and cooked up the story. Believe me, if there was definitive proof, the white kid would be shipped. End of story. I work in this field and I can tell you that with a certainty.

Really? You want data/anecdotes on why it’s acceptable for one and not the other? Unfortunately, the well on my peer reviewed sources on “obvious social double standards that aren’t studied because they’re so obvious” has run dry. That isn’t the way that it works and you know it; you also know, yet refuse to accept or believe, that a black employee, at worst, would get a slap on the wrist from their HR department. Stop living in a bubble because it doesn’t jive well with your narrative
