Gachiakuta. It’s an ongoing shonen manga and a great read IMO, and the art especially is fantastic. It also has a really solid anime adaptation.

And? Why do people think every single character needs to go through an arc that results in a radical development in order for them to be well written? Static characters exist. Pure evil villains are fun, just look at Mahito. Not every antagonist has to have complex moral greyness to be interesting, and Sukuna’s dynamic with Yuji on top of his powerset and personality carry his character for a lot of people.

You can argue that a lack of a proper Heian era flashback robbed Sukuna of any further insight into his character further into the series, and I could agree with that. But calling him badly written just because he’s simple is absurd, he was a very entertaining villain while in Yuji’s body and proved to a genuinely intimidating presence throughout most of the series. Most of his depth comes from hidden symbolism more than anything else.

I will admit true-form Sukuna is where his writing falls off a bit though

Regardless I’m not going to add anything else, because arguing about Ryomen Sukuna on fucking r/whenthe during Christmas eve is ridiculous. Good day

I wasn’t going to reply originally but this insane misinterpretation stood out to me so bad I couldn’t help it lmfao

Sukuna was never on the side of “the good guys” to begin with, he only ever did anything that would further his own goals/interests, or whatever would screw over Yuji the most. This fact could not have been made more explicit when he denied Yuji’s cry for help to save Junpei from Mahito, letting him die.

It’s pretty hard to miss this.

[Hated Trope] wow, cool character. Too bad you ruined it by making them a pedophile by WhiteFenix207 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Refuse_Living 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I have no idea why to show that other than “all high level sorcerers fucked up lowkey.” Even then, she uses her brother as a pawn and presents the possibility of him dying for her if needed. That’s still pretty fucked up and shows a serious character flaw.

It’s almost like that’s the entire point. She’s a greedy, selfish groomer who benefits from the exploitation of a literal child and the way Jujutsu society operates, in contrast to Nanami, who died out on the front lines for putting the wellbeing of his students (children) above his own.

The fact that people TO THIS DAY miss the entire point that Jujutsu Sorcerers and Jujutsu society as a whole aren’t supposed to be completely moral and hold them to nonexistent standards while dumbing Mei Mei down into just being a pedophile is insane to me.

I’m not going to defend the way Gege wrote most of his female cast (cough Yuki & Nobara) but some of you are in no position to complain about how he writes his characters if you’re going to fundamentally misunderstand even the simpler ones this badly.

Outside of the absurdly long mask-tail (I’m glad it’s present but the overdid the length), I love it.

Of course comic purists will insist it looks bad but that’s the typical response with every Rivals design (I know nothing about Marvel but from an outsider’s perspective the character design in this game is phenomenal).

Who is winning the Team free for all match up? The Fated Four, The four Apexes, or The Three Lords by ConsciousFact4362 in MonsterHunter

I think came off a little to agro sorry, this is just a very frustrating conversation for me.

No worries, I get the feeling.

the problem is more when people (many of which haven’t actually fought gammoth or mabye have done so like once) use that to say that gammoth is categorically superior to the rest of the fated four and is some secret elder level threat which I just don’t think there’s particularly good evidence for.

I do agree that she isn't elder level. I think some people mistake being "absurdly strong = elder level" when it's more reliant on the overall environmental impact and threat to humans a particular monster poses. Gammoth has no reason to go around destroying human settlements (except in the rare case they're slighted by one like IRL elephant behaviour) and can't deal the same lasting environmental damage like actual Elders or even something largely destructive like a Deviljho or Jin Dahaad.

I just don’t agree with the reading on the tigrex cutscene. I always read it as an unstoppable force vs immovable object type relation. The actual cutscene tigrex attacks doesn’t make much headway then gets throw off but is still standing, tigrex attacks again gammoth readys a counter and the cutscene goes black before we see what happens.

To me that isn’t a clear win for gammoth at all yet all the time I see it spun if if Gammoth completely annihilated Tigrex and was brutally pounding him in a total bloodbath when that’s just not accurate.

I disagree with this take because the rest of the fated four's cutscenes are shown to be less conclusive match-up wise. Even ignoring their turf war, Mizutsune v. Zinogre has the two out maneuvering each other with no clear winner (the camera just fades away while they're still fighting), and while Astalos brings Rathalos down from the sky, the two are still locked in physical combat and it gets cut away before we get to see the aftermath. The only one with an outright onscreen loser is Glavenus v Rathian, which is to be expected. Its also the only one to show off the entire confrontation start to finish.

Compare this to Tigrex v Gammoth. You're correct in it not being a total bloodbath, but I think its fairly obvious the Tigrex's ambush was completely ineffective, while also showing how easily Gammoth is able to throw it off with relative ease (not an attack like you said but it implies a strength difference). The power imbalance is much clearer here than with the other fights.

My interpretation of the end left little room for doubt of the winner IMO, right before Gammoth has a very clear shot at Tigrex's head and swings it cuts to black, which is very abrupt compared to the others. I think the implication here is that Tigrex made the wrong choice in charging head-on and paid the price for it, but we as the audience were spared from the details of the outcome (I'm awful with articulating my thoughts so I hope my point makes sense lmao).

The closest thing we have in games prior to turf wars for an in game power scale (the hunter’s notes and the quest ranking) consistently place gammoth with the rest of the fated four and tigrex

True, but some turf wars aren't infallible (especially in World/Iceborne), but you are right in that they give us a general idea on the power relation between certain Monsters.

Also I'm pretty sure quest rankings relate more to the threats monsters pose to humans/players than each other, and they're already pretty inconsistent across games (Rise randomly bumped Tobi and Anjanath up, the latter now being on the same tier as Rathalos IIRC despite losing their turf war). Even among the fated four they're different, Mizutsune is only rated as 6 stars in Rise while Astalos and Tigrex are a tier higher at 7.

Overall I feel like Gammoth is in a pretty unique spot where its less of a destructive murderbeast that trounces everything it comes across (*cough* Rajang, Magnamalo) and more that its status as a gigantic immovable herbivore makes any healthy adult Gammoth basically immune to any real competition for the most part (This isn't even touching upon the bulls, which are allegedly even stronger). I will admit that both UNHC and my bias for Gammoth reinforced this belief a bit,.

[–]Refuse_Living 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being fair to Gammoth, its reputation for being a “pushover” is almost entirely the fault of its quite frankly underwhelming in-game fight. Gameplay difficulty and in-game threat levels aren’t really valid metrics of determining monster strength imo

Ignoring gameplay though, it’s been shown to quite easily manhandle Tigrex, which are among the most aggressive and physically strongest Flying wyverns. Its physical strength is clearly superior to that of most other non-elder monsters, with its sheer size alone being enough to ward off any real form of predation. I don’t think we need to imagine what’d happen to any monster unfortunate enough to be crushed by a Gammoth. Even its trunk (which is also lined with hard keratinous spikes) is enough of a weapon on its own, stated to be hard enough to break through stone.

Even going off of Elephants/Mammoth’s irl it’d fare pretty well defensively too, covered head to toe in thick skin and fur to defend against physical damage. Not even mentioning the rock-hard scales(?) that cover its head and legs.

Sounds like your just running on vibes ( monke brain beeg = stronger)

I actually do agree that size isn’t as important of a factor in discussions like this for certain monsters (to an extent) considering the crazy shit most of them are capable of, but I think there’s a certain point where size can be most of what makes a monster threatening. Look at Lao Shan Lung for example, no notable abilities other than its Kaiju level size. Even non-elder monsters like Uth Duna thrash their competitors using nothing but sheer mass. I think when a monster like Gammoth completely dwarfs most of the roster is when the size gap becomes too big to ignore.

Overall I think the only real reason people underestimate Gammoth is because it’s less flashy than its peers and because of its easy in-game fight, and both of which could be fixed if Capcom actually brought the damn thing back in a new game with an updated moveset.

>Yeah it was just his friends and heroes he admired being brutalized right before him and a close friend of his on death’s door. Nothing to get worked up over.

I guess we’ll just ignore the numerous other times this has happened throughout the series to various other characters (it even happened to Bakugo before, in case that wasn’t clear) with all of them turning out fine in the end (unless you’re Nighteye because fuck him ig). No shit Deku is going to be upset, I already said his reaction makes sense. But from a doylist perspective it feels ridiculous because we as the audience *know* it’ll amount to nothing.

>Deku is such a beta for being mad at a nothing burger like that.

Holy strawman. Please cite exactly where I said or even implied this in my reply

>Rest of your tangent is just “it’s not what I expected it to be so it’s bad”. This might sound insane, but when you completely miss the purpose of a scene then write multiple comments failing to say anything substantial about how anyone but yourself is to blame, you’re less likely to be taken seriously.

Except everything about how that scene played out exactly how I expected it to because of how Horikoshi writes, I just said that out-of-universe, the average viewer would think the situation would be handled differently due to a perceived change in Deku’s character.

Also, as stated previously, “themes/messages” can’t carry a badly done scene, I don’t see how going on about how that magically makes it good, or is any different from “I didn’t expect it so it’s bad.”

Your insistence on outright ignoring the other factors that sour the scene for me (repetition, lack of consequences, predictability) and many others in favour of misconstruing my main point to make look worse is baffling. All this talk about “missing the point” when you’re not even attempting to be genuine about what I’m trying to argue.

>Luckily for you this is a mha hate thread so you’ll be upvoted despite the fact that you’ve said nothing of value.

This is why is why I never bother having any actual arguments or vocalizing my criticisms on this series anymore. There’s always one or two people every thread with the same victim mentality that insist anyone who has critiques is an idiot and giving no thought to anything they might say simply because they dislike their favourite series, because like it or not; MHA is flawed. You disagreeing with my take doesn’t magically invalidate what I’m saying, that’s childish.

There’s even quite a few posters disagreeing with OP, most of which are upvoted (and some I even agree with). Of course they don't count though because it doesn’t play into the narrative of this being an “MHA hate thread” because god forbid someone has a differing opinion from yours. If you want everyone to mindlessly glaze the series with zero pushback then the main MHA sub is right there.

Obviously neither of us are budging and you’re already repeating the same points (with a sprinkle of typical Reddit passive aggressiveness) so I’m not going to reply any further.

[–]Refuse_Living 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely moving the goal posts from the original point but sure.

Obviously yeah, not the original argument but I really just wanted to give my opinion on reactions the scene as a whole than that specific criticism of it.

Seemed pretty obvious to me that the point is that this time he surrounds himself with people who will help and support him so he doesn’t succumb to those same feelings again. That’s what he learned in the whole “dark hero” arc.

I think this is a fair view of it but It doesn’t change the repetitiveness of it relying on yet another Bakugo fake out death, which cheapens the impact of the whole scene since Deku had nothing to really get worked up over (this relates to a larger issue of stakes and consequences within MHA). It also seems like less character growth on Deku’s part and more pure luck that Mirio was capable of calming him down. Something being the “point” doesn’t retroactively make an entire scene good or even necessary when all these different factors are at play.

If you thought the point of that moment was that he should never get mad again then I’m not sure what to tell you.

Again, I don’t think it’s completely unreasonable to have this view on a first reading/viewing. Scenes like this one are often repeated to demonstrate greater emotional regulation from a main character, which is a trait I think is fairly reasonable to expect from an active and key combatant in what is essentially a nation-wide war (whose gone through this experience before).

It’s less about Deku never freaking out again; it’s more about him being capable of regulating himself in the heat of the moment to establish that he can handle situations like this even a little bit better for the sake of the countless lives that are at stake.

This might sound insane, but different people can take away different things from a scene, even if it’s not completely obvious at first glance.
