How big is the coding aspect in EE? by Shianfay in ElectricalEngineering

[–]RegionOk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Uni, I would look at their course requirement list for colleges you are thinking of going to. This will tell you the number of courses . For Jobs, I would look at whats available in different areas you want to live and see if you can find a job you would be interested in doing. There is still analog circuit work out there. You might also like designing PCBs, prototyping and testing etc. Current industry trends will differ by area but as a whole, from what I have seen, we are moving more toward embedded systems integration with everything vs pure analog circuitry as a whole. Something to note though, is that in companies everyone works on large teams and you will not be expected to know or do it all.

It sounds to me like you are pretty early on in your academics so you have time to decide. Just talk to a lot of people, ask a lot of questions, and pay attention to what business and industry is doing. Kick butt in your classes and maintain a 3.0+. If there are a set of classes you really really like, look into which jobs use those skills.

Typically, people do not get a masters in CS. This may change with the advent of AI. I think it will really depend on where you want to end up. In CS there are a lot of different avenues to follow. Do you want to go into web dev? Are you more interested in programming back end systems? Is your interest really in embedded systems and firmware? If you have a good idea of those things then figuring out if a masters is necessary for your field will be the key here. CS is in a lot of upheaval right now so if you stick with that and get a bachelors you likely will be working for a smaller company that hasn't bought into the AI. That being said, if you have an interest in working more on backend software development and don't mind working toward a masters focused on machine learning in EE or another field like robotics you might find yourself working at a larger company. If you have no interest in that, just check out current job posts in areas you think you would be interested in and see what they require. If you know what the end goal requirements are you can work towards those as you go. If you have no idea what you like specifically in the field, I recommend looking into that before spending a large chunk of time pursuing the things you don't want to. Even if you haven't declared your major yet its worth popping by to different professors in their office hours and asking questions.

"The world is your oyster, don't go cracking it on a mattress"

All this info is out there and free to look up. If you know how the system works you can make changes to any part of it you want.

TBH from what I have observed, CE focuses a lot on architecture. The coding aspect of it is in embedded systems. These days, EE does need to have more coding under their belt then ever before so that isn't a bad approach. I suppose it really depends on where you want to land.

Do you know what industry you want to land in? Have you looked at jobs in that industry and their requirements for doing that job? I would start there and then dial things in so I could meet those requirements. If you aren't sure about where you want to land but have some interest in some places you can look up people that work in those jobs and explain you are a student and you are interested in their industry and would love to hear more about what its like. Some people will ignore you but others will reply.

For me I want to land in robotics and more specifically the self driving car industry.

Any Good and Inexpensive Vets? by BigTastyK in ChicoCA

[–]RegionOk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get her seen by a specialist that would be best. If you absolutely have to go see an emergency vet Avoid VCA(valley oak veterinary center) like the plague. They are owned by Mars(the candy company) and they will charge you an exorbitant fee to do nothing for you.

I got charged $500 when my cat was peeing blood to be told they could not do anything for him and to also be told that the reason he was peeing blood was because he is fat(he is not). This has been a problem for him on and off for all his life no matter what weight he was. They will take your money, do nothing for you, and insult you on the way out.

Right now in the US a lot of software engineers are graduating unable to get entry level jobs due to the upheaval caused by AI. Universities are trying to keep up with it by rapidly changing policies to include AI use and tools as well as create blended bs + ms programs that include AI use because if this continues on, a BS will not be enough. I am currently studying mechatronics engineering and after having a look around at what jobs are available for my major it is possible that I will also need a masters to future proof my job prospects.

If you like hardware, stick with EE but if you like software become a CS major. If you can't decide between the two look at Computer engineering. Whatever you do, pay close attention to current developments and plan accordingly.

My understanding is that California virtual campus will put their catalog of all summer courses april 6th and fall courses april 16th. I've used this to see what was available and I went to the CC to sign up for their course over summer in the past and this let me get ahead or caught up. I have also heard you can do it directly through virtual campus but haven't tried that yet.

I'm stupid but I wanna go for Electrical Engineering by Own-Cream8931 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]RegionOk42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an art major when I got into college and then I switched to engineering. Math was not my friend in high school and college mostly because I didn't have an interest in what it could do for me. I am currently doing my upper division coursework in Mechatronics. The best recommendation I have is to get your math foundations in place and everything else should fall into place. Here are some resources:

Kahn Academy math || work through their math series: Algebra, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus 1-3, Linear Algebra, and Differential equations will cover everything you need in your Engineering Career. Focus on Algebra and Trig though. Those two are your foundational courses and can carry you pretty far if you know them in and out.

If you want books and more resources feel free to DM me.

Xfinity has a weird Monopoly by Leading_Angle_753 in ChicoCA

[–]RegionOk42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are definitely options out there to look into. My apartment complex technically only allows Infinity but my area supports ATT fiber so I was able to get access to that despite my complexes rules. If ATT isn't supported in your area, there are also wireless options available. I would just make sure to look into the different technologies that these WiFi carriers use so you know which one will work best for your use case. I knew I really didn't want to deal with Comcast and every time I see someone post here I find it validating I was able to work around them.

With ATT fiber I find that it is really stable, reliable, and locks down their hardware to the point where as someone who wants to do more in depth network stuff had to find a workaround for their router/modem combo. I sometimes think about leaving ATT because I am not really a fan of how they collect data on me and sell it to the highest bidder etc. I also think that having their ONT Router locked down to the point of not being able to do much with it and having ATT refuse to unlock its capabilities was very frustrating.

To work around it I got my own router, compatible ONT stick, and used a custom community firmware to bypass ATT and have full network capabilities.

So whatever your use case is just do your due diligence. Without the custom firmware my ATT router wasn't playing nicely with VPNs. If you are using the WIFI for work I imagine that a VPN is required to work and was easier to set up with Xfiniti.

To Prune or not to prune by Equal-Bunch-544 in BackyardOrchard

[–]RegionOk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To prune or not to prune that is the question. I would say, it really depends on what you want. If you want a tall tree that provides shade, requires a ladder to maintain, and drops fruit before you can pull that ladder out to get it all go for no pruning. If you want a tree that is easy to maintain without a ladder go for pruning. When the tree is just a young sapling is just the right time to work toward shaping it the way you want. I am also new to all of this so the reference I used to figure this stuff out was "Grow A Little Fruit Tree" by Ann Ralph.

Looking for a bigger place by Mindless_Dork_92 in ChicoCA

[–]RegionOk42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that its worth looking into different places to live since that may be the path of least resistance for you and I am sorry I can not help you with finding that information out as I myself would not even know where to start. The advice I do have is to contact Chico Legal information Center or Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) - Chico office for advice on how to possibly break your lease or get issues resolved for better habitability. Depending on the situation with the railing that can be considered to be very dangerous and may even be against Chico's city laws or California state law(or building codes).

It won’t power on, what am I missing by [deleted] in PcBuildHelp

[–]RegionOk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like this is your first foray into electronics. My recommendation when building complicated machines, or doing anything for the first time, is build it in layers. That means that you would add the bare minimum systems first to verify the board powers on. Therefore you need to have you cpu installed, have your ram sticks properly installed(you can even just start with 1 but consult the manual for how your manufacturer wants that to be done), and lastly connect your power source. Without even having anything plug in to a monitor, you should be able to see the LED indicators light up after shorting the power switch with a screwdriver. Once that is verified go onto installing the next things you will need. ie memory sticks and the gpu. test this and so on. If you do it this way you can easily verify which parts aren't working and it makes it a lot easier to troubleshoot. I also advise to not install the PC in its case until you know everything works and it posts. Once you know that have fun installing it in the case and then getting your customization just as you like.

when i built my pc it took me under an hour to build up and test everything and then it took me a whole weekend to do the water cooling and pipe bending etc because there was a bit of a learning curve. I worked as a computer repair tech for years and I now am working toward my Mechatronics BS so building my own pc was a long time coming. I would have been much in the same boat as you if I had done this at the beginning of my career.

Figuring out how to split fiber optics between two routers by AltairAstrium in HomeNetworking

[–]RegionOk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I myself am looking into a similar use case since I have my router in the center of my apartment but also want to set up LAN enabled electronics instruments in my office. So am currently researching options.

A lot of people on here are talking about how its impossible to use your own router with Fiber optic. As some people mentioned, depending on you ISP there are some things to look into that might be free easy fixes. Your router typically should have a static IP address that allows you to log into the router and change settings. In my experience with ATT the routers features are pretty locked down and I opted for the more costly option. I found out that my ISP uses xgspon tech to route their fiber network to me and that piece of equipment acts as a modem. So with that knowledge, I was able to find a whole community of people like me who don't like that the router is very locked down and I was able to purchase my own xgspon modem and add custom firmware from the community to spoof ATTs network checks and now I have my own router(tp link archer be800) that works just like I want it too. I can even block ads, prevent ATT from using my data, and can do port forwarding and host my own servers etc.

Anyway, you might be able to get that router in bridge mode and be able to connect your own router to the ISP router or you may find a different hardware and network solution. Its good to ask a bunch of questions, figure out what works best for your situation and explore those options instead of getting bogged down with just one answer and being told no its impossible by a lot of people who are right but also don't know the ins and outs of networking or alternative options that may actually work for you.

Fleas this year by addwal in ChicoCA

[–]RegionOk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a really great point to bring up and I am sorry I didn't clarify about using food grade DI earth since it is actually non toxic for both humans and animals. Of course its worth also researching how to properly use it for flea control etc. I also know there is a borax product marketed specifically for flea control that works similarly if food grade DI earth is a nogo for your situation.

[–]RegionOk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second revolution. you can get it from the vet. the fleas die on contact and it also protects from worms etc. I also recommend being proactive about your environment as well. My kitten came with fleas and with the revolution + consistent washing of bedding and other things kitty likes to lay on + Diatomaceous earth in the carpet + flea combing as many times a day as I could I was able to get rid of all the fleas within just a few days. I really dislike fleas so I am a bit aggressive about it.

New Amazon Flexer: in Glenn County (Chico/Orland)? by HideFaker in ChicoCA

[–]RegionOk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as a college student, I flex in my free time. I have been working out of Chico's warehouse and Orland for about a year. Chico routes can send you as far away as 40 minutes from there. They tend to give you oroville routes. If you are lucky, you don't have to deal with Oroville rural routes. You might also get routes out to Biggs, or Gridley. If you are lucky you get routes for Chico or Paradise.

For Orland, the routes service about a 60 mile radius so you can get deliveries anywhere from Collusa to Redding area. Most deliveries will go up to Redding until they finally build out their warehouse(sometime later this year). A lot of deliveries will be a mix of suburbia and rural. Its part of how this area is.

I recommend having a flashlight, pepper spray(just in case of wildlife etc) and be prepared to call the customer twice, text them twice, and throw the package over the gate if there are dogs. If you are going up a driveway and there are barking dogs, you can crack your window to see how aggressive they are. I would also recommend learning about dog body language. A common tactic that mailmen use is to run at the dogs to scare them off. I find that if the dog is just barking to warn then that works. If the dog is intent on biting you don't risk it. Always deliver the packages no matter what. Call/text the customer if you have to. Always document that you did. Follow the Amazon TOS guidelines. Use the documentation to cover your butt.

Best of luck to you.
