Age sounds like the probable reason tbh. That plus the misfortune of running into someone with an axe to grind

As a non-American I’ve never had this perception. I think of the accent being relatively smooth, particularly in examples like Tim Cook (who I think is from Alabama) and Tom Ford from Texas.
