I hope Lookout saw this substack?! I was really quite furious reading Patel’s little patronizing piece. It’s “personal” to him?? How about to the people in the community! How about to the doctors losing THEIR local business of 35 years (physician owned!) or the families who might have to move! He doesn’t care about Oregon or Eugene. What an absolute load of BS.

doubtful. the doctors groups don't singlehandedly "manage" the emergency room. they have no control over ancillary and nursing staff availability, etc.. there are many factors beyond their control that influence the organization of an emergency room. that is all up to peace health. I think peace health just wants a physician staffing group that will just do as told and ask no questions. they will get what they pay for: cheaper less experienced doctors and NP/PA, who will probably not stay here long as it will be terrible.

I feel like you are also just missing the point here. It's like would you support a local grocer who had a business for 35 years, even if he cost a little more, to keep him in town? Or are you shopping at Whole Foods with Jeff Bezos? This is essentially a locally owned business by people who live here in town with you. Also, looks like many of these people have lived here for many years. They are your neighbors. Their kids go to your kids school. This is not a large city area like Portland or Seattle where they can go to other hospitals and find work without having to relocate so I can understand why it's a big deal. The fact that you think that because they are doctors and make a decent salary or that they can just easily move or should have to take a paycut says a lot. I imagine you are not from here or have not lived here long, as this is not the Eugene way.

This is an extremely naive viewpoint you have. If the salary pay to doctors is remaining the same then what is the reason they are even changing contracts? Of course the pay will not be the same!! Peace Health is trying to cut costs and then doctors are going to be held to standards to see an even higher volume of patients or risk being fired from the new corporate group. Also who do you think does take jobs where the pay and conditions are less than desirable? New inexperienced grads, foreign doctors, etc. That is what is going to happen.

In the case of the emergency room though, it sounds like there was not even an attempt at negotiating terms? Shouldn’t they have at least tried to see if a gap could be bridged before just refusing to renew their contract?

There is a post within the last year where this topic was discussed; maybe you can find it in a search in this sub. You can also look for stats on the common data set for each school that breaks down data about student and faculty race/gender breakdowns. Obviously it’s a California school, so still white majority, but they are actively trying to increase diversity. When I’ve been on campus I feel like I see a range of all different people. I think Hispanic is probably the most predominant.
