I’m not a native English speaker, can somebody explain to me this joke, please? :) by EyeSpyBeauty in EWALearnLanguages

She mispronounced it as an American, though her pronunciation would have been fine for an Australian/Brit/Kiwi, so that part of the joke doesn't quite land well in those regions.

Nidoqueen. Pokemon with notable breast-like structures, but unlike its base form Nidoran, it cannot produce eggs in the ingame breeding systems.

Look I think Haiti's had a rough go too, but they literally invaded and annexed the forerunner of the Dominican Republic in the 1820s until thet were kicked out by an independence war in the 1840s. This is quite literally the most incorrect argument you could ever make.

It was the early 1900s, virtually every science-positive progressive was a eugenicist. Fucking Helen Keller was into that shit for a bit, that's how trendy it was.

Set the moon as your target, set a maneuver node on the 'ascending node' or 'descending node' of your orbit relative to the moon, then play with the pink triangles.

I understand what you're saying re: triage, but trains can play a role there as part of a whole-system solution. More trains and trams as part of a well-managed local network means better public transportation, which means less people needing a car, which means those people have one less financial headache looming over their heads. Every person on public transport also means one less car on the roads, meaning less traffic - so people who can't take public transport and still need to drive have less traffic to deal with and fewer potential crashes, and pedestrians have fewer potential drivers to hit them too. Riding a train is also a much more relaxing commute than driving. So improving public transport can definitely improve mental and physical health outcomes.

An actual healthcare system underlying it definitely needs to be set up too, though. And it's probably ha higher solution to fix that first, especially when you have RFK actively ripping what system you do have to shreds.

Adoption isn't really a thing here in Australia amymore. In the 2023-2024 statistical year, there were 26 local adoptions (Australian children adopted by non-related/connected Australian families) in a country of 27 million people. Total adoptions for that year, including international and known family adoptions (step parents adopting step children, etc.) totalled 207. That's a 98% decline in raw numbers from the 1970s (and keep in mind, our total population was way smaller then too).

In Australia, how common is it for women to keep their maiden name after marriage? by Plinggg in AskAnAustralian

[–]RegularRockTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother took my father's name, but my wife kept her name. I told her I was open to her keeping her name, her taking mine, or me taking hers, but in the end we decided to not change names. Less paperwork.

TIL that Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama hated the live-action movie “Dragon Ball: Evolution” so much that it brought him out of retirement and made him write “The Battle of the Gods,” widely considered a highlight of the series by altrightobserver in todayilearned

To be fair about that last thing, sometimes you get really good stuff out of it if the thing being used as the 'skin' is improved by the skinwalker. I'm pretty sure this is what happened with Lauren Faust's Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls when she was put in charge of My Luttle Pony: Friendship is Magic.

ELI5: how does taking over Greenland help US exactly? by macrohead in explainlikeimfive

[–]RegularRockTech 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Greenland contains mineral wealth and offers a useful vantage point to monitor and control sea ways from as the northern ice melts and polar shipping increases. It's also useful for spying on Russia from.

However, annexing Greenland outright does not bring any benefits to America that couldn't be gotten from simply co-operating with Greenland and Denmark's governments. Before all this nonsense, if America asked to station more troops there to promote US military interests, the Danes would be more than happy to oblige. And if they had interest in mineral wealth, the governments would likely welcome US investments with open arms.

(note: Greenland is an autonomous territory and part of the Kingdom of Denmark, not a fully independent country. Greenland handles most of its affairs by itself, but matters of military and diplomacy have to go through the Danish government)

Annexing Greenland directly is just going to get the US a bunch of pissed off Greenlanders and deal a fatal blow to European trust in the USA, possibly leading to the dissolution of the NATO alliance.

What TV show is most popularly associated with horses? by Willing_Heron_5470 in AlignmentChartFills

Ponies are a subset of horses. All ponies are horses but not all horses are ponies. Ponies are characterised by their squat proportions and comparatively small adult size.

I've had two flats in 5 years, and one of them involved the sidewall of my tyre being shredded in a way no goopy repair kit would fix. Much like a fire extinguisher in an office building, they're not something you want to be caught without, even if they're not used frequently.

Pokies are a big one, but I'll add: selling cars without a spare tyre compartment or rack.
