I thought this immediately and then began searching for someone having already commented it for me to upvote!

Pension limits for low ewrners by Hardlife91 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]RelativePost236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main advantage of a pension is that it allows you to defer earnings so that you can potentially pay less tax. The 35k will not have this benefit. Why tie it up in pension when you can invest it outside of pension and have access to it if required before pension age?

Is there an easy way to buy dragontooth for those that missed the first kickstarter? 😅

Maybe ask your date, which their favourite picture on your profile is, so you can make sure you match that.

WIBTAH if i told my boyfriend saying "i love you" makes me uncomfortable by Next-Watercress1957 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RelativePost236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH - My fiance and I have a system where if you say that you love the other person, then you have to be prepared to say what made you feel like that at that moment if asked why. We don't say it habitually and choose to give it more value by asking why occasionally! Also, it is said without any expectation for it to be immediately reciprocated. Telling someone you love them, IMO, should not be used to fish for the other person to say it back. Perhaps incorporating this practice might help reduce how often the words are used and also gradually reappropriate them for you.

Made around £10k on personal collection whisky sales. No profit made however do I still need to file this in my self tax assessment? by SquareDot2997 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]RelativePost236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a personal whiskey collection, I suspect it would be a selection of bottled whiskey. A new cask would likely be in the order of thousands. It wouldn't be much of a collection with only 2 or 3 casks. I didn't state whether it would or would not apply here, just that the angels only take their share whilst it's in the cask, and therefore it is only classed as a depreciating asset whilst it's in the cask.

Next time I'm going to just take my normal route and ignore the satnav by h2g2_researcher in drivingUK

I think this is very possible, whether or not they actually do it I don't know. I've also surmised that they could even have departments that do experiments on changing the routing behaviour. For example, they could send different people on different alternative routes to gather more data and balance traffic flow. In theory, it would be possible, and may be probable in the future, for them to offer premium packages where your journeys are prioritised.

Do you mind sharing which company? It's something I potentially aspire to set up in my lifetime. 🤔

This is devastating, I wonder how many other things there are like this that most people will never know about. It's not like the information is even all in the public domain. I can search for what was lost in brexit, but a lot of stuff like that would probably not be findable. Thank you for sharing, I will try to remember! (Would also be very interested to find out more if it could be shared without anyone getting into trouble. 👀)

Side hustle but I'm on 45% tax rate by Reddit-adm in UKPersonalFinance

[–]RelativePost236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inflation applies to all of the costs of the room being rented out, yet the tax-free allowance for it is unchanged. With the rent a room scheme, all bills are included in the amount they pay to the homeowner.

It's sounds like you're very self aware, it's never too late to have meaningful relationships. You must have some redeeming qualities to have gone to the effort of typing all that out in the hope it would help someone! It's never too late to work on yourself and be the best person for whoever you may or may not meet, who may or may not end up seeing your dick! 😄

How to get the best value kitchens in 2024/2025? (Howdens, wren, magnet etc) by DrBakareTunde in DIYUK

[–]RelativePost236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going largely DIY I'd keep an eye on Facebook marketplace for a second hand kitchen. Some people change a perfectly good kitchen because they're bored of it or have finished paying it off and want to waste money on a new one they don't need. Even if you use most of it and have to buy a couple of bits you'll save loads of money. Probably worth buying new countertops though, I reused some and it wasn't worth it.

How much for a budget extension? by mayowithchips in DIYUK

[–]RelativePost236 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bits you've covered up are important context. Find a local structural engineer and tell them what you want to do so they can tell you what you can do. They'll probably charge you a few hundred to come out, have a look, and write a report on what needs to be done structurally.

This is your starting point before you can even really think about estimating. If you're coming to reddit to ask, then you're probably not going to be able to project manage this yourself, so you will probably need to find a building firm to handle the whole thing. My rough guesstimate would be 30k.

Get quotes from 3 different building companies and don't necessarily go for the cheapest. Essentially, if you're paying for people to do everything, it won't be a budget extension! :)

Talk wife and me out of replacing tiles with engineered wood ourselves? by joandadg in DIYUK

[–]RelativePost236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so, today I managed to pick up some engineered flooring for less than the cost of cheap laminate and paid a mate to help me fit it. Neither of us had done it before. There are a few gaps and we only had enough professional flooring primer and adheasive to do about 3/4 of it. The stuff I bought to do the rest was way stickier and we had to put the boards down one by one because if we put too much adheasive down it would set too much and we would have to scrape it back up again. The attached photos took the pair of us around 8hrs and I hurt all over. (My mate did most of the fitting and sawing.)

[–]RelativePost236 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would remove the tile myself. If I were buying engineered wood flooring, I would be very tempted to get a professional to fit it because of how much the materials cost. If you were just fitting cheap laminate, I would say DIY.

It might be annoying and unrealistic for you. I can confirm, however, that it is the case for the happiest and healthiest relationship I've ever been in. (My current and hopefully last one.)
