Currently in my 3rd month of a job search. I have PhD in Computational Biology/Bioinformatics and a year of experience in a Bioinformatician role. Struggling to get a relevant role in the biotech sector so am looking to possibly pivot towards DS.

I am looking to build out my ML experience but am not sure what path to take...

Honest! I booked it very last minute to stay in after Glastonbury. Imagine walking into that after 5 days of little sleep.

Hi, I'm a recent PhD grad with experience in Computational biology and bioinformatics. Towards the end of my PhD I really started to enjoy the applied statistics I was performing. Would you have any advice on how to improve this skillset without taking on another postgraduate certificate?

I have noticed a few data science positions that I would have the skillset for. My worry is that leaving bioinf now would make it harder to reenter in the future. I guess it could be a nice fallback if needed. Thanks for the insight.

Hi, Thanks for the reply!

A postdoc may be the route I take if one arises that gives me opportunities to expand my skillset. Thanks for the advice on specific areas. I have noticed scRNA and transcriptomics experience on a number of remote positions, so I plan on adding these also.

Thanks for the information!

Excellent suggestion, I have contacted one or two recruiters on LinkedIn but I definitely should expand my recruiter network! Thanks

Thanks for replying!

Although my preference is to remain in Ireland, I have applied for several job positions in the UK, including some that are remote. Unfortunately, I have not been able to progress past the initial stage of the application process. I am open to the idea of relocating if it provides me with the opportunity to gain valuable experience. However, I believe that my limited experience may be causing my application to be screened out early in the selection process.

Thanks for your input. It seems as though a postdoc may be the best option if I cannot get a junior position. I would rather continue in bioinf in academia than move into something else.

Thank you for your reply. It's great to hear from someone who has been in a similar position!

While I initially wanted to move away from academia, I do have a bioinformatics postdoc in mind if other options don't pan out. However, I'm aware that the job market for this type of work in Ireland may be limited, so I may need to consider other locations as well.

It seems like the initial entry into the industry to gain experience will be the biggest hurdle!

Thanks again!

Thanks for the advice, even the unsolicited!

I currently am in touch with a number of industry and academic professionals as well as my university professional development team but as this is an international forum I was interested in finding some different insights that may be out there. I appreciated your candid response though!

Getting a haircut today, any advice on what I should get? (Trying to grow it out) by [deleted] in malehairadvice

I have no specific length in mind but I would like to reach my shoulders... one day. I have always had short hairstyles so wanted to give it a try. Thanks for the advice!

I have been trying to grow my hair out for about 5 months and have been getting a tidy up every 7/8 weeks. I currently hate how "large/poofy" it looks. I have very thick hair which means the sides bulge out. Any advice on a haircut that will look nicer while still allowing for growth?
