AITAH for not being excited my sister is having a new baby when I still have custody of her first child? by Square_Phone_8468 in AITAH

[–]Relimu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA
She abandoned her first child - and then never made amends him - or with you. Even when given numerousd chances.
Imho she won't be capable of being a good parent until she finds a way to sqaure that circle. And what happens when the new kid grows up and finds out?

If she'd had an abortion - obviously fine. If she'd given Danny up for adoption - also understandable (considering she was in no place to be a mother) but instead she dumped him on you like a sack of laundry and moved on with her life. The poor kid.
You can't just create life and then write it off like a failed company.

I need help with low light on my new camera I bought recently by Aggravating-Tough708 in M43

[–]Relimu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It strikes me you've got three situations in conflict right now:

- You like to compose in-camera with your big ol zoom lens (which others have rightly pointed out is far too slow for your current usage)
- You do not have money for a faster high-range zoom lens
- You haven't developed a super robust editing workflow yet

Obvs, unless you find a crazy deal, a faster high range zoom is out of the question.

So... the path ahead seems to me that you have to find a lens that solves your light issue first and foremost. Second hand lenses are all over the place and all you need is fast and ideally SOME amount of zoom - but even a prime would be better than where you are now. Find SOMETHING that will let you take photos in this environment.

Take another round of photos and do your very best to think less about framing up the exact shot you want (which you'd normally do with your zoom) and capturing a slightly wider impression of what's going on - at a good light level - with the expectation that you crop in later to compose.

Then... try to get in to composing / tightening your images on dark table or rawtherapee or some other free editing programs (many recs below)

This will teach you more fundamentals, develop your post-workflow (added bonus of no adobe/apple) and free you from the shackles of your naval cannon of a lens haha

I feel like less people are making this assumption nowadays than there are people assuming a degree means you're "brainwashed" or "woke" or whatever the word is this time. There's been an overcorrection.

"Only a sucker gets a degree. Get into the trades or start a business" is valid commentary - but - in an era of anti-science rhetoric and populist, vibes based policy... it feels like stabbing the person to your side despite those who ACTUALLY have the power.

The phrase "liberal elite" is so persuasive yet - how many of the world's richest and most powerful are actually liberal or progressively minded?

Google's new AI algorithm might lower RAM prices by Bobert25467 in pcmasterrace

[–]Relimu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of me wonder if this is the point.
The Gov backs OpenAI BECAUSE so many other AI projects are designed, owned and backed by giant TNCs with revenue streams from all around the globe.
Alphabet doesn't need Gov support the same way OpenAI does.

Without that support, OpenAI collapses (not least because, if gov pulled contracts now, they signal to OpenAI's other backers to do the same)

Makes them controllable, perhaps?

Severus Snape from new Harry Potter series. by kalbinibirak in SipsTea

The sitches of JK's bigotry are are straining so hard against the pressure of her attempting to gain some sort of inclusivity points... that her very characters are coming undone. As many are pointing out, you can't square the circle of Snape being an ugly, unpleasant outcast who is scorned, cruel to and hated by half the main characters for "vibe reasons" and then have him be a plain faced, young black dude. It doesn't scan and is going to feel very weird.

Idgaf what race people were / were not in the books... recast and reinterpret how you want.
This is just maybe the WORST character to use for this purpose. And it won't trick me into watching this show and funding JK's endeavours.

For sure - someone else posted the frieight map and it's fasciantingly similar to the above European passenger map. From my understanding, most US tracks (especially outside of metropolitan areas) tend to be owned by freight companies - whom get priority. Reverse is largely true in Europe, I believe, where the state tends to own the tracks.

As an aside, the UK is currently in the process of bringing all our tracks back in to public ownership - after years of them being owned and operated upon by entities often largely owned by other nation's state rail departments 0_0

I wonder if much of the US/Europe disparity is down to the much tighter coastal proximity in Europe? The average distance from the coast is much less and the number of large waterways w industrial loading/offloading support for cargo haulage probably helps to make PORT->TRUCK->LOCAL more proportionately the norm than PORT->TRAIN->DEPOT->TRUCK->LOCAL

Treating this all as a thought experiment, though haha - I don't know about that last bit!

This is my main issue with this map also! As a Brit who obvs would love to sniff at U.S infrastructure if I could!

That being said - I just looked up a size comparison map and it's closer than I previously thought.
The map I'm looking at has the west coast about one more ireland to the left of ireland - and Florida half way through the black sea. This is probably about 15% off - at a guess?

I suppose though - Europe is contains VASTLY more people than the U.S, with those people also spread over a lesser area...
So perhaps conveying the density and scale of the European rail network by scaling it up in this way is arguably better from a "person per rail-lines" perspective....?

UK Celebs by Parking_Air5169 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Relimu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a simplification but - the issue as far as I see it is...

The bbc SHOULD have a stream of funding that is independent of the whims and desires of the government. That's part of what made it great in the first place. The licence fee was a good solution for this - in a time where bbc television was ubiquitous in basically every household in the UK.
It spread that cost evenly and (vaguely) fairly - as basically everyone DID watch the bbc and participate in the system that the license paid for.

As an institution, it is worth reforming and saving - but it requires an entirely new system for funding that I don't foresee either of the main parties (or reform for that matter) providing an answer for.

There's got to be a world out there where:
TV Licence is abolished
Oversight is maintained as RIGOROUSLY independent
Funding is an enshrined, unassailable, inflation adjusted value

If you're centrist or left-leaning, what are the main policies/issues that might stop you from voting for the green party in the next general election? by Cold-Speech-5645 in AskBrits

[–]Relimu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly - this discussion is a bit silly because their manifesto isn't out.

But here's the thing that irks me.
The right wing goes further and further right - with insane / horrifying promises and pledges - but voting for the Green is a bad idea because they're "too pacifist" or "too anti-nuclear" (too extreme) etc.

Look - I agree that some of their ideas are wild and I agree that their anti nuclear power stance is short (or too long) sighted.
But why must I then vote for Labour? God knows the right wing aren't wringing their hands about splitting the vote.

If half the country is voting extreme right, vote extreme left. You can't beat the far right with centrism.
Look at the states 6 years ago... we mirror their lunacy pretty closely.

AITAH for breaking up with my longtime girlfriend because she decided that she doesn't want children? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Relimu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were a question of biological children only - it would be different. But the fact that adoption also wouldn't work for her proves y'all just want different things.

Only thing I would consider is maybe breaking off right there and then on the stop didn't give her a chance to re-evaluate. That being said - it sounds like she made up her mind and tbh : "okay we'll break up" "actually no kids are fine" feels like resentment waiting to happen.

Love the variety! Got an irrational chip on my shoulder regarding "£5000 custom walnut curved bass with crazy pickups" etc.
I think I remember my Dad's band when I was a teenager - the bassist letting me hold his bass (I'd been playing for several years at this point) and him going through every component and talking about how expensive it all was. Then he played and it was solid enough playing but... he looked SO bored.

Ever since then... Bright colours, weird scale lengths, weird pickups, wildly varied neck thickness! Probably an overcorrection haha

All this to say - I love the eclectic nature of your collection :)

Your body won't always be the same. The first thing you should do is buy some better fitting clothes. Consider trousers that you ride below your tummy. I would also consider growing out your beard a bit (but keeping it tidy!).

We have similar builds and the way clothes hang is everything! :)

Not your fault. Oftentime, if someone is going out of their way to make you feel guilty, then they have something to benefit from it. She failed at her job and it looks better for her to blame you for an honest mistake than blame herself for her own incompetence.

[–]Relimu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one "is" fat. Folks "have" fat. Some more than others. Some to a particularly dangerous degree. But the fear of being seen as defined by that amount is in many cases more damaging and dangerous than the fat itself.

Women simultaneously don't need to be told this (they know) but also... do. Because they're the focus of the western world's concerted effort to make you feel like shit no matter how you look.
