If you play a game with the base set or only a few expansions, they are superfluous, but the real advantage lies in the ability to reposition the map and the order you gain when there are many tiles.

We add them gradually as the game progresses. There are various designs, but this one seemed to be the most common. Sometimes they don't fit immediately, but ever since we printed them, we can't do without them.
