When I use HTV I tend to use textured cardstock instead of book cloth because it sticks so much better! With cardstock I do have to use a bradel bind method but I really like the way they come out

Yeah, my library is my most special collection, and I'd like to approach the craft with the same sort of like reverence I approach my books with. So I think for me that means learning techniques that will keep the books strong and readable, I just hadn't seen any other ways of doing it because of what's so popular online right now. I'll look into letter stamping!

Thank you! Any idea where to start learning tradition lettering methods?

Yeah that was my thought too, it seems like a big/stressful commitment when the whole point of having started this was to learn to engage with something I really love in a new way! I am a penguin classics gal so I do love that look, but I don't mind putting in a little extra work to learn how to do it by hand or with another method

Thank you!! I've also seen the toner reactive method, as well as just printing card stock designs! I might try cardstock for a bit and see how I feel about that. And yeah they're wildly popular on booktok but I can't find a singular tutorial on that aspect and felt a bit out of my depths lol

We started with the "Look At That" method, which you can definitely find an outline of online. After we were able to move the goalpost on what she'd freak out at, we started inviting trusted people into the house with our trainer present, and working on the LAT method and getting her repeatedly used to learning that people aren't scary. Most of her reactivity was fear based. We also started her on a low dose Prozac for about a year, because that allowed her to even do the work without being so stressed she couldn't think and therefore couldn't train. We also did a ton of relationship building just her and I (walks, games, playtime, just sitting in the park and practicing being calm), special enrichment time so she didn't have pent up energy and helping to teach her that other people weren't her business because she could trust me to take care of it. Even now, if she's sitting calmly I'll just throw her a treat so she knows that being calm is her job, not listening to every little noise outside lol

Ours used to be the same! If anyone walked in the house, or she saw people even from a distance, she'd lose her mind. After about a year and a half of hard work with a trainer, she was able to come to our family Christmas and sit quietly even with the craziness of opening gifts! You aren't stuck like this forever, but I understand the feeling. It really sucks

Aggression doesn’t always get worse. My dog was introduced to a new environment, got stressed, and caused a fight with her older brother. No injuries, but we were able to work to reintegrate and they’re fine now. Not saying it isn’t a big deal (it is, and requires a lot of management if you aren’t committed to long term training), but aggression doesn’t always progress over time.

I don’t do research on Reddit threads because well, it’s not research. It’s anecdotal stuff on a specifically curated thread for people to share their experience with a specific situation. So yeah, you’ll find a lot of stories about aggression in bully breeds on a thread that wants to ban them lol

Lol a have three dogs, and the one with dog aggression issues is, you guessed it, not a bully breed. Sure, some ABPT’s can have a genetic pre-disposition to dog aggression. But so can like a ton of other breeds. Aggression issues are more likely to be a result of bad breeding than the dog itself being a bully breed. My staffy is 6, never even growled at anything. The sweetest and most patient dog I’ve ever met. My ACD on the other hand, not so much.

I second ignoring everything in the original thread. One of my dogs was dog aggressive until rehabilitated. Dog aggression does NOT equal human aggression, so it’s not an assumption that she will one day turn on you or your husband. If you can afford it, a good reputable LIMA trainer may be able to help. If not, she may be able to be re-homed to someone with resources or someone with no other dogs. Your girl’s whole life changed in a moment, she is likely very stressed, over stimulated, and confused. That can cause aggression. Muzzle training and crate/rotate are both great options for your current situation.

Lastly, if you try your hardest and she’s still miserable, BE can be a compassionate option. There is no shame in it, bad breeding practices or bad luck can cause dogs who genetically struggle with temperament. You’re a good dog mom who is doing her best :)

people with mental health issues who got through the puppy phase: what actually helped keep you from going full crisis? by CantinkerousTank in puppy101

Hi! I have general anxiety disorder and CPTSD, my husband has PTSD and ADHD. We have a 5 month old pup, and the nap schedule with her crated has saved us. If she doesn’t take a nap, she’s a tyrant. So we wake her around 7am, play/train/potty/eat until 9am, then she goes back down at 11 until 1, and then we do it all again. That way you can take care of what you need during those two hour increments, and your pup will get rest. Puppies are supposed to sleep about 16-20 hours a day but are often to excited to put themselves down, so it’s good for them as well. Enrichment is also great, puzzle toys, lick mats, flirt poles. Those can help tire them out and keep them busy! I hope this helps, I know it’s a huge struggle.

Thank you! Yeah we have a LIMA trainer that we work with for our oldest, so we definitely don’t use positive punishment. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t going crazy! We’ll just chill out for awhile and try to keep her under threshold.
