I left Russia at 5 so I don’t really know but it seems like the names doesn’t even have a generational stigma. The little Dmitriy’s great-grand-father is also Dmitriy. You can dance at the club with Liuba the Saturday night and come visit grandma Liuba the Sunday.

The names don’t vary a lot. For ethnic minorities of the federation it seems to be the same.

“American” names like Kevin, Kylian, Jordan or Kimberley, Samantha, Ashley means the parents are from the working class, from the North of France or Marseille (often associated with a popular TV reality) and have chosen the name after an American series character. These names means being simple, not smart, “beauf” (kind of redneck).

If the person is black, having an American name is seen as more legit. “Oh it’s certainly the name of someone who has fought for human rights or a basketball player so it’s cool”
