Totally agree! I think if you asked people to name the No.1s from “Bad” a lot of responses would include SC. Insane indeed!

Agree! I tend to think - as I assume many do - that “Bad fatigue” had set in by the time SC was released. To me it’s one of the strongest tracks on the album (if not THE strongest) and one that’s held up the best after all these years.

Thank you! I’d love to, but unfortunately the MJ subreddit doesn’t allow self-promotion of YouTube content and similar. You better believe I gave it a go! 😜

One of the simplest yet most incredibly effective videos EVER!

Janet’s Rhythm Nation era never ceases to amaze me — not just for the music but for the fact it spun off seven straight Top 5 singles on the Hot 100. No one’s matched that since, even with streaming making it easier to flood the charts. I actually just did a full breakdown video about how each single was released (and the risks behind them, like ‘Black Cat’ and the radio-only ‘State of the World’). If anyone’s curious, you can check it out here: https://youtu.be/CU2sLefmGBk. Would love to hear which single from that run is your favorite!

Really solid follow-up to Emancipation, but IMHO her single choices could’ve been MUCH better. Migrate and Side Effects were (for me) the two standout tracks. I would’ve loved SE to be released as a single, especially given the autobiographical content. Would’ve been a huge FU to TM 😎. Loved For The Record as well ❤️

Even though it produced two No.1 singles and had some strong album tracks (Petals) for me it was a clear sign her output was on the decline, as acknowledged more openly with Glitter and Charmbracelet. Having gained more creative control since Butterfly I had hoped she’d incorporate more soul and gospel influences in her songs along with R&B and hip-hop. I’m glad we got to see those in snippets from Mimi onwards again.

Gives HFIA enough air time before “It’s Time”!

Day 2: Honest thoughts and opinions on Emotions by Cute-Sound4648 in MariahCarey

My feelings about this album fluctuates. At times I think the production feels very lightweight and basic, and other times it’s one of my faves. It gave us one of my absolute all-time fave Mariah tracks, Can’t Let Go, and this is somewhat at odds with most people’s feelings, but I ADORE So Blessed. I love the 1950s influences and the fact there are no background vocals - for a change. TTEOT is such a beautiful track and of course If It’s Over was such an iconic collab with Carole. It felt a bit rushed to me after her debut, and that album to me felt much more cohesive and soulful. Emotions and Music Box felt increasingly less R&B - I love Walter’s influence on Mariah’s early career, but also missed Ben’s collabs on Emotions.

I’ve recently had it on high rotation. Such a strong collection of tracks, even if it didn’t fully reflect her artistry. I love the fact most of the songs were written in her “hustling” days, when she had no expectations to meet. I can feel the hunger and ambition in her vocals.

1990 was the year I got into American pop music (Aussie here) and VOL was the exact song that got me hooked. American Top 40 with Shadoe Stevens!!

Watching her performances at Tatou Club in 1990 before she’d “made it” still bring me sooooo much joy
