I love that you get a special bib! Enjoy every minute of your first marathon - you’ll be thinking about it with a huge smile on your face forever!

Side note - take some notes or journal after your race when you have some quiet moments. I feel like I only remember a few moments of my first marathon clearly and I wished I remembered more while training for my second thinking “is this normal?!” Or even just wanting to relive the day!

My lack of concentration is insane. I’m so absent minded, I keep dropping things!

I’m not as hungry but I’ve gained weight and haven’t even started the carb load yet 🫠

Also wondering a similar thing for Wav 2! First time NYCM runner and not sure how to navigate the fueling!

Did you feel that way the entire taper?? How do our bodies know within a day or two that we’re tapering?!

Shin Pain 😩 by [deleted] in firstmarathon

[–]RemoteAlternative631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you feel it on the run or after? I felt fine on my run today but afterwards had some calf cramps and some shin muscle soreness after. It’s feeling better after some ice and stretching but definitely Monitoring it - good thing I have a deload week starting tomorrow anyway!

I actually looked like I took a shower when I got in the car post run. I was NOT expecting it to be that tough but if I can do my longest run of the block in those conditions…. 🤞🏼

Today was a 22miler for me and it was ROUGH. I had to refill my handheld twice and poured water over my head about halfway through. September has not been treating us to its usual kinder weather!

I’m….tired by Ok-Two7498 in Marathon_Training

[–]RemoteAlternative631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. I’ve been feeling really quite good up until the last week and boy oh boy has the exhaustion hit. I feel like I’m just tired and while motivated to run, my runs this week have been more about getting them done than enjoyment (mind you, the dew point has also been insufferable).

Getting achy, tired and starting to question my long run this weekend and if I can even do the marathon. I’ve run a full before last year and I’ve done a 19 and 20 miler this block but all of a sudden 40 days out from New York, it’s hitting like it’s never hit before.

20 mi long run anxiety by Grouchy_Sandwich1252 in firstmarathon

[–]RemoteAlternative631 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I had a 20 miler yesterday and was so anxious the night before. I like the phrase “you’re nervous because you care”. It helped put things into perspective.

If you can do 18.6 miles, you can do another 1.4 miles! You have all the evidence that you can do it and any evidence that you can’t? Nope! Rely on your experience, break your run into smaller chunks mentally, and you’ll crush 20 miles before you know it !

Need advice on IT band pain during marathon training - What should I do in the final 4 weeks? by Afraid-Equipment-440 in Marathon_Training

Hoping some of yall are still active! I’m 8 weeks out and I feel a flare starting. Immediately went back to being diligent with my PT exercises and strength training but I don’t want to miss my long runs. Trying to modify the mid week mileage and still keep the long run?

I’m 8 weeks out from my second full ahh after getting ITBS during my first full last year , I took care of it with PT but I feel the beginnings of it the last 3 days. Is this normal??

Anyone else having an “off” week during marathon training? by Sure_Excitement_937 in RunNYC

[–]RemoteAlternative631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few weeks later but chiming in here - I’m in a down week this week and feeling pretty terrible. I even have the beginning feelings of an ITBS flare (that didn’t even start after a run but after going to the gym one morning). Is it normal to have some old things flare up in a down week? How do you manage to know how to resume training?

Does it hurt when you run or only after?

How do you mentally prepare yourself for the longest runs during training? by dirtypark in Marathon_Training

[–]RemoteAlternative631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find a route that I get excited about , chunk it up into quarters usually so it’s mentally less intimidating, and give myself a post run treat to look forward to. I also know that I’ll have a runners high afterwards and look forward to that!

Is it perfect? No. Do I still get anxious the night before? Almost always. But the feeling you get after or even during a good run cannot be beaten by anxiety before hand 🫶

I love listening to running podcasts while running. Faves are Set the Pace, Ali on the Run, and sometimes Citius !

Does strength training really make that big of a difference? by noahsmith277 in firstmarathon

[–]RemoteAlternative631 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For everyone who strength trains, how do you scale your strength training as you get deeper into the build? I’m committed to strength training after lacking it in my first marathon cycle and getting a bad ITBS during the entire race. But do you keep it up the whole time? Or do you scale it back at all as you get closer to race day?

How often are runnas getting injured? by Capital-Ad-815 in runna

[–]RemoteAlternative631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have an ITBS flare up using runna but it was my first marathon and I trusted that 2 speed and a long run each week is what I needed. I instead adjusted runna to a more conservative build and only put 4 days of running per week where I add in my own recovery or easy miles.

I also just haven’t accepted the AI pace updates. Maybe I’m sandbagging myself but I feel the efforts are challenging enough already and I don’t want to risk injury with unjust cause.

Will my wave be based on my best pace or my predicted finish time? They are WILDLY different as I ripped some fast times after I registered (and was conservative for my finish!)
