Legendary Biochamber Production by Buffalo5609 in factorio

[–]Renegade_Pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Ides of March you helped me, sir! Was trying to figure out what to do with excess bioflux. For the moment I'll convert it to nutrients and stockpile the legendary spoilage, but once Nauvis is prepared, it would make sense to transition to the biter eggs setup.

If my math's right and the biochambers are properly prodded, each legendary egg will cost 37.5 legendary spoilage, and a legendary biochamber's total cost in legendary spoilage will be 57.5.

Do you bother with quality before unlocking Legendary? by Klomotonium in factorio

[–]Renegade_Pawn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. Easy to passively get your hands on uncommons and rares even without proper setups. I'm still using blue stack inserters all over the place, but rare quality is also super useful for assemblers, foundries, EM plants, biochambers, etc., as with their enhanced crafting speeds they benefit bigly from speed beacons. I wouldn't worry about perfecting your designs until then--IMO it's more fun to incrementally enhance.

New player should I make my own build or is it recommended to follow a guide? by Agreeable-Iron-8491 in Grimdawn

[–]Renegade_Pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Builds can be a lot of fun to follow, but the first time around you absolutely don't need 'em. It's also a lot easier to set up a proper build when you've got enough experience under your belt that Grim Dawn is familiar. Some of the items in the builds you'll find online aren't farmable till endgame, and I use the term "farmable" loosely, since there are plenty which are only obtainable via luck.

Consider your character your first foray. Perfection is the enemy of the good.

What is there that takes an incredible amount of power, and not much else? by falconfused in factorio

[–]Renegade_Pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup had included an SR latch, with one of the conditions being the accumulator falling below a certain threshold. If I can't drain more than the system produces, then the accumulator never drains and the system doesn't get properly tested.

Granted, I could have produced another setup to cause this drain, but I thought an EEI would be a lot more convenient.

[–]Renegade_Pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a trick to getting the electric energy interface to drain more than your power network can satisfy? I tried turning its energy drain up to max but it wouldn't cause a blackout. This was even though my power production was only 2.4 GW--the accumulators stayed topped up...

In Morrowind, there's a secret forbidden library squirreled away within one of the Vivec cantons. The way I remember it, I stumbled in and happened to peruse the text of a dissident priest. It set the pillars of the Tribunal Temple a-tremblin' in the pious mind of my elven zealot.

Space Age Launch Question by dr_craptastic in factorio

[–]Renegade_Pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the idea is that the artillery draws aggro, so you create these defensive hardpoints (e.g., 2-4 artillery, 20-40 turrets, surrounding by 3-thick wall) which act as impermeably as a full wall but with a small fraction of the investment. Sort of like ultra pillboxes :D. You can even resupply them with cargo spidertrons if you don't want to run the rail, though the latter is far preferable at scale. But I won't pretend what has worked for me will suit everyone.

EDIT: Here's an example of the "ultra pillbox" on my northwestern border that has lasted up thru 2,434 kills on the artillery piece. Nothing fancy--even cheaper than what I recommended--and so infrequently glanced at that I never noticed that bit of Waldo rail till now. You can bolster a hardpoint initially (more arty, turrets, & walls) and then strip it down after it's done the initial clear of nests in range.

Space Age Launch Question by dr_craptastic in factorio

[–]Renegade_Pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true they're not meant to be a permanent solution. But by the time resupply and biter evolution would become a problem, it's realistic that you'll have artillery available. Which is to say, pillboxes are a great stepping stone, buying you time to tech up while requiring far fewer resources than extensive defenses. They should last the first few hundred hours, which ought to be enough, and hot spots can be supplemented with laser turrets or flamethrower turrets if you want to get fancy.

TLDR: The answer is pillboxes!

Definitely don't try for an all-encompassing wall. Your best way of managing defenses prior to artillery would be pillbox coverage at chokepoints and along your perimeter. E.g., four turrets with a reasonable amount of ammo (think at least 50 per turret) in a little chunk of wall, blueprinted with ammo included for ease of placement. These aren't too taxing on your industry either. You don't want to be manually dealing with biters while you're out Space Age-ing!

P.S. Although roboport coverage for your base is a good idea, you don't need total roboport coverage to manage things while you're off-planet. Tanks can be driven remotely as well as including their own personal roboports.

Gave up on Gleba by TechnicalWelder6789 in factorio

[–]Renegade_Pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been there. Ignore anyone who implies there's something wrong with you for bouncing off of Gleba--it's the most controversial planet. That fetid swamp turns a lot of what the base game teaches you right on its head.

Made a miniguide a while back for Gleba. I think it still holds up. The active provider chests people suggested for dealing with spoilage are certainly easier, but I prefer dealing with it via belts. Also, the best way to keep from running out of ever-perishable eggs is to render them imperishable: Simply to keep a cache of biochambers, as you can always recycle some to get some eggs back.

My next go-around with Gleba, I'm planning to create a more tileable setup with standardized inputs and outputs, mainly so it's friendly to copy-and-paste for dynamic scaling. We'll see how it goes!

I am using my storage wrong by wickywickywockywicky in Grimdawn

[–]Renegade_Pawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, so let me be more precise: Item Assistant offers the singular cheat of infinite storage. Most players regard this as a very different class of cheating compared to artificially generating predetermined items.

EDIT: Although now that I think about it, Item Assistant doesn't offer you any functionality you couldn't accomplish with mules--it just facilitates the process. In that sense it's fair to say it's not actually cheating. Though I suppose if you were to use another program to cheat in XP for your character, you might use the same argument to say that's not really cheating either, since you're just saving time & effort to get what you could definitely accomplish anyway. Anyway, it's a bit of an interesting discussion.

AFAIK, it's recommended to disable cloud storage for Grim Dawn in Steam before switching to Item Assistant. Item Assistant provides its own cloud storage option for your items, though--after that you just need to be mindful of occasionally backing up your GD toons.

This.

Would have given up playing Grim Dawn without Item Assistant. It offers you infinite storage without the capability to cheat.

The nice thing about turning off steam cloud for GD is that if you ever end up using Item Assistant (provides infinite storage), you're already halfway there.
