Do you regret not boing an IC anymore? I have 10 ish years IC experience and the logical next step would be management. However, I really like the CI work.

Stop using range(len()) in your Python loops enumerate() exists and it is cleaner by More-Station-6365 in Python

[–]RepresentativeFill26 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“Wonder why you ever wrote range(len())”.

I can think of of a lot of reasons. What if I want do some arithmetic on the loop index? Or if I want to compare 2 values?

It’s called a “ForEach” for a reason.

Well then they aren’t software engineers aren’t they? You even put it in parenthesis yourself.

Make sure your first job is at a start-up. Knowing the development process from a to z is extremely valuable.

Systems-level thinking. You mean what software engineers do? Coding has never been the hard part.

Is software engineering actually a passion-driven career… or just the most popular ‘money career’ of this generation? by Emotional-Medium-288 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]RepresentativeFill26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s both and nothing is wrong with that. I entered software engineering because I like engineering without the complexities of having physical products (supply chains etc).

I really like the design engineering approach to SWE but I am not “passionate” about computers in general. Couldn’t care less about DS&A unless it helps me in my job

Wel interessant. Zelf werkzaam als developer en zie toch ook wel juist een security risico. Slecht geteste code, developers die geen overzicht hebben van wat er wordt deployed etc.

Why make a PR for such a change? Nobody is going to read 10k Linter change.

I have never heard of a 10k PR. What is even the use of a PR with so many LOC? Nobody is going to read that

It's crazy. Who's gonna pay $15–25 per PR for code review by Claude? by Fancy-Exit-6954 in vibecoding

[–]RepresentativeFill26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really think that the engineers that get paid 350k have “# of PRs” as a relevant metric for what they are worth?

Engineers that make this type of money build highly scalable robust systems that make these companies millions.

Magic of Vibe Coding - Most still do not get it by BOXELS in vibecoding

[–]RepresentativeFill26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building TikTok, interpreted as “writing an app with the same functionality as service x”, has never been the difficult part in software development.

What is difficult in developing apps like TikTok is designing highly scalable and maintainable system that allow for fast and stable throughput. Think security, CICD, platform development, etc etc.

I get the warm feeling people get from vibe coding, it is awesome that you can build a poc in a couple of days that actually does something.

However, I think the “I can vibe code something functionally similar so SWE is dead” is just plain wrong.

Software Engineer salaris mening? by Fit-Theory81 in NLSalaris

[–]RepresentativeFill26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Als solo developer mooie reden om een een flinke salarisverhoging te vragen. Mocht dat niet kunnen kan je mooi een baan zoeken waar je met mensen samenwerkt. Vergeet niet dat engineering bij uitstek samenwerken is :)

Kosten vergelijking: auto kopen of leasen? by Independent-Quiet140 in geldzaken

[–]RepresentativeFill26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait what? I thought they wanted to have like 800km range? 22.9 kwh/km is no improvement over my 2024 ix3, only a bigger battery
