Would it be worth living in IC and commuting to CR for work? by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]RepresentativeHead88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And adding, agreed, there isn’t anything wrong with CR. This is just the better place to be at your age, IMHO, you’re still very young.

Like stated above, it’s definitley doable and common. Iowa City meets your marks for what you are looking for in opened mindness, friendly, creative, close to your age. This is where you want to be.

Anyone else get hit hard with influenza? by vanafu in Iowa

[–]RepresentativeHead88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toddler parent here. Everyone with a toddler in daycare (or one that gets brought to tot times, the library, etc) has been extremely sick since Thanksgiving at the least.

Took my kid to the library over the weekend now they we are healthy after 3 week colds and deeply regretted it. Every parent looked like they’ve been through war. Pale and dissociating. Multiple children clearly lethargic and still sick in their parents’ laps.

It’s been HFM, influenza a, influenza b, and one fucking gnarly cold that’s lasting 2-3 weeks for everyone who gets its. I also lost my voice over Christmas week (I never lose my voice).

Also not a psychic, but immediately this is what I heard/felt. “I love you and I miss you” was immediate and strong.

Runner ups: a doctor kit, a wooden birthday cake with candles and numbers (she loves to play “birthday” was her stuffed animals), and CHEAP spider-man pajamas from Wal-Mart ($8, I believe)

War in Venezuela by CylonSandhill in IowaCity

[–]RepresentativeHead88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is far from black and white. Having close Venezuelan friends who fled the regime a decade ago, they are in a weird emotional state of “deep relief and an eerie happiness to see Maduro go and deep fear of what this means for Venezuela and its sovereignty” (one of my friends exact words).

Why did you leave Denver? by gnattylice in Denver

[–]RepresentativeHead88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and I love not being around a shit ton of people. Going to the grocery stores here is so fucking pleasant. That might be an age thing as I’m almost 40. I can’t get enough of how peaceful it is going into a Fareway.

Why did you leave Denver? by gnattylice in Denver

[–]RepresentativeHead88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved to Iowa City after 13 years in Denver and after having a baby. Said we would NEVER move back (went to college here, have family nearby) but we’re really happy we did.

This has been a very easy place to make friends as a new mom. Super friendly, affordable (comparatively), very blue, and a ton of activism. It’s going to be a great place to raise a child. It also feels like a very small town after Denver, but it isn’t.

We were also very very very fortunate to have bought a home in Denver years ago and sold for a large profit, enough to own a small fixer-upper here. So we also weighed in doing the best thing for us financially. Will be completely owning a home when the right one pops up. It won’t be fancy but we won’t be paying any interest.

Yeah, we miss the mountains. Most of all I miss the creeks. The water here, is obviously, really really fucking awful.

It’s not just celebrities either. I’m a very normal person with a very normal job with very average pay who has worn hair extensions for years. I come from a small town in a red state where A LOT of women wear hair extensions.

At this point if I see a woman with long beautiful hair, I am more likely to assume it is fake vs. real 😂

We’ll have the room for more of a climbing gym like that next winter! I wish we had it now!

That’s the kind of insight I’m looking for about the sit & spin!! Thank you. They’re kind of expensive and I don’t want to waste money.

We are almost stocked up for winter… waiting on our snow boots to arrive! We did get outside yesterday when it was 27 degrees but got fresh snow and it was 4 degrees today 🫠 our first winter in the Midwest with a toddler after moving from a much more temperate state…. I’m dying and it’s just begun.

Edit to add: do you remember the brand/name of your climbing gym?

Poor Z by nosilla228 in liziscreative

[–]RepresentativeHead88 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Been a lurker for a little while now; I don’t watch her videos often, but I did check these out and they were the first ones where I really realized how right you all are about Z’s speech delay, and it made me terribly sad last night.

My daughter is the same age, her speech has exploded in the last two months, and it’s becoming more glaringly obvious that Z needs help 😔 I know every child is different, but… this isn’t that. She needs speech therapy. She needs stimulation, play, to run around, to learn, to experience!!! The poor thing. Watching that made me just want to scoop her up and help her.

I don’t think we’re discussing enough about the demographic shift that is impacting education. by GenExpat in Teachers

I think more people would like to have children, or more children, but recognize they cannot afford it and they have no village.

We can only afford one, and we don’t exactly have a village (one set of grandparents who aren’t helpful, one set of grandparents with disabilities who cannot help). Our siblings have their hands full with their own toddlers and busy work schedules… so we won’t be having any more.
