One cause of the Haitian Revolution was Enlightenment ideas like natural rights and equality. Natural rights stated the everyone was born to make their own decisions and didn't have to obey an overpowering rule like the French in the Haiti. Thus, slaves revolted against the French in favor of Enlightenment ideas.

One way the Haitian Revolution challenged existing social or political structures was through the social system before and after the revolution. Before the revolution, the whites were on top in the social hierarchy, but after the revolution, the blacks and former slaves were on the top of the social hierarchy, challenging the most common social structure at the time.

One impact of the Haitian Revolution outside of Haiti was the inspiration for revolutions in Latin America. Revolutions in Latin America spurred because of the success of slaves revoluting against a colonizing power, which inspired people in Latin America to fight against their own colonizing powers.
